Maps and Atlases is an indie-band originally out of Chicago, and a couple of
years ago they released a very promising debut album "Perch Patchwork". If you
are unfamiliar with their sound, think a strange mix of Elbow-meets-TV On the
Radio, as flawed as that comparison is. Now comes the band's second album.
"Beware and Be Grateful" (10 tracks; 43 min.) starts off with a gently brooding
"Old & Gray", on of the best tracks on here. After that, the album gets
submerged into more grooving tracks like "Fever". The album reaches a fever
pitch on tracks 5 and 6 "Silver Self" and "Vampires", which are the highlights
of the album. But the other tracks are quite nice too, if not as urgently. Other
highlights include (for me anyway) "Bugs" and the album closer "Important". In
all, a great album! The musical growth from the first album is remarkable, and
impressive.
I had the good fortune of catching these guys again just recently at the Bunbury
music festival here in Cincinnati, and what a blazing 60 min. set these guys
brought. They played many of the tracks of this album, and live it rocked much
harder than on the album. Definitely go see these guys if you have a chance.
Meanwhile, "Beware and Be Grateful" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
