    ▓        Though Centro-matic have been called "highly                 ▓
    ▓        prolific," they've kept their recent disc short -            ▓
    ▓        short, but sweet enough to make you want more.               ▓
    ▓        Singer/songwriter Will Johnson started Centro-matic          ▓
    ▓        in 1995 in Denton, TX as a side project. This disc           ▓
    ▓        hangs somewhere between the lo-fi, catchy pop of             ▓
    ▓        Guided By Voices and the more expansive, experimental        ▓
    ▓        pop of the Flaming Lips (though the later is mostly          ▓
    ▓        due to a vague quality in Johnson's vocal). The title        ▓
    ▓        track - and there are two versions here, a                   ▓
    ▓        straight-up rock version and more atmospheric version        ▓
    ▓        - has a powerful melodic hook, supported by an               ▓
    ▓        equally catchy bassline. Other songs such as                 ▓
    ▓        "Guillotines Hung Together" aren't as immediate but          ▓
    ▓        are almost as powerful. The e.p. is recorded fairly          ▓
    ▓        raw, and though it doesn't sound intentionally               ▓
    ▓        "lo-fi," the grit does help the wheels grip; too much        ▓
    ▓        studio gloss would have smoothed over some of                ▓
    ▓        Centro-matic's rougher edges and made Flashes &              ▓
    ▓        Cables a less interesting listen.                            ▓
