  |  With Strings Attached is a remarkable blend of contemporary   |
  |  and classical music, which sees multi award winning rock band |
  |   Opshop join forces with 18 top orchestral musicians for a    |
  |  breath-taking performance at Wellington’s Old St Paul’s       |
  |  Cathedral.                                                    |
  |                                                                |
  |  The 18 orchestral musicians are all members of the NZ         |
  |  Symphony Orchestra, and among the best players in the country |
  |   of the violin, viola, cello, harp, double bass and drums.    |
  |  Leading them is esteemed conductor, Hamish McKeich.           |
  |                                                                |
  |  Filming initially takes viewers behind the scenes, as the     |
  |  band and musicians prepare for the live event. It chronicles  |
  |  the highs, lows, triumphs and tensions of the six week        |
  |  rehearsal period, and reveals some of the history behind      |
  |  Opshop’s success.                                             |
  |                                                                |
  |  We follow Opshop band members Jason Kerrison, Bobby Kennedy,  |
  |  Matt Treacy and Clint Harris as they re-work their best-known |
  |   songs for the event – including the platinum-selling “One    |
  |  Day”, and iTunes chart-topper “Maybe”.                        |
  |                                                                |
  |  We then see the full live collaboration between Opshop and    |
  |  the orchestra, at Wellington’s Old St Paul’s Cathedral, held  |
  |  in November 2012. The cathedral’s gothic setting is           |
  |  transformed for the occasion, with visually lush lighting and |
  |   decorations.                                                 |
  |                                                                |
  |  The orchestra is dressed in lavish clothes and modernist      |
  |  make-up too, to drive home the idea that it’s them crossing   |
  |  over into the contemporary world, not Opshop into theirs.     |
  |  This sets With Strings Attached apart from earlier musical    |
  |  culture clash TV specials, like ENZO, which saw contemporary  |
  |  artists entering the classical world.                         |
  |                                                                |
  |  The end-result is a new perspective on two different genres.  |
  |  Rock fans will love the depth the orchestra adds to Opshop’s  |
  |  sound, making their songs more emotional, dramatic and tense. |
  |   Classical fans, meanwhile, will see that contemporary        |
  |  artists have musical talents far beyond a repetitive rock     |
  |  beat and loud vocals and guitars.                             |
