ªª▓ Bleiburg, for now over a decade, has long been one of the most unique and, frankly, ▓ªª
ªª▓ infuriatingly difficult artists in the post-industrial realm to define on any number of ▓ªª
ªª▓ levels. Though nearly always rhythmic, the music can switch out from the modestly abrasive ▓ªª
ªª▓ nature of industrial to dreamy synthpop, militant martial to straight-up dance-floor EBM, to ▓ªª
ªª▓ folk-laden bombastic experimentation and minimal neoclassic elements. Aside from that, the ▓ªª
ªª▓ core of the project has always been Stefan Rukavina, the man behind the label Thaglasz that ▓ªª
ªª▓ began as a Death in June fanclub, but has extended in various efforts to include names from ▓ªª
ªª▓ A. Schwarz, Edmund Schroeder (MDMA, Human Nihil) and, apparently, one M. Turkovic. It would ▓ªª
ªª▓ seem that now, however, weÆre back to the primitive time of the projectÆs efforts where ▓ªª
ªª▓ Stefan Rukavina alone is resting at the helm and creating all music within. Bleiburg has, ▓ªª
ªª▓ of course, had a moderately successful career thus far, finding a great deal of support from ▓ªª
ªª▓ many of EuropeÆs most beloved post-industrial labels in Cold Spring Records, Old Europa ▓ªª
ªª▓ Cafe, SkullLine, and of course, the wonderful Israeli label The Eastern Front. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Bleiburg, as with many artists in this realm of martial music, has always been a project ▓ªª
ªª▓ that presents itself as deeply rooted in the historical significance of war. Where most ▓ªª
ªª▓ others seem to only hint at vague references and the militant theme as an artistic ▓ªª
ªª▓ aesthetic, Bleiburg has always been fairly up-front about their intentions and articulate ▓ªª
ªª▓ about the subjects at hand. For instance, the projectÆs very name was risen from one of the ▓ªª
ªª▓ last atrocities to occur in World War II: The Bleiburg Massacre. This mass-execution of ▓ªª
ªª▓ fleeing soldiers and civilians took place near the Carinthian town of Bleiburg on the ▓ªª
ªª▓ Austrian-Slovenian border. As many as 110 mass graves of Croats have been discovered, a ▓ªª
ªª▓ fact which not only Bleiburg pays homage to with the name of this project, but one that ▓ªª
ªª▓ culminated into the climax of BleiburgÆs career in ôWay of Crossesö. ôTill the Last Nightö ▓ªª
ªª▓ is no different, existing as a celebration of the independence of Israel, its militant ▓ªª
ªª▓ might, and its history. The albumÆs eight-page booklet is constructed of martial ▓ªª
ªª▓ photographs of Israeli soldiers throughout various times of history, an excerpt from a ▓ªª
ªª▓ speech given by Major Abba (ôfatherö) Eban to the United Nations in 1948 regarding post- ▓ªª
ªª▓ independence 1948 Arab-Israeli War / Israeli War of Independence, and a brief page-long ▓ªª
ªª▓ introduction to the Israeli air-force attack on Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq that includes ▓ªª
ªª▓ a brief reminder on the flip-flopping nature of American politics as they initially pledged ▓ªª
ªª▓ support and then, during the bombardment, expressed neutrality. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ The music found on ôTill the Last Nightö contains samples, excerpts and (possibly) lyrics ▓ªª
ªª▓ from these two historical Israeli events and the two-decade history of conflict between, ▓ªª
ªª▓ including the forced exodus of nearly one million jews from the Arab states into Israel, ▓ªª
ªª▓ whose descendents now make up roughly 41% of IsraelÆs population today. The album opens ▓ªª
ªª▓ with ôAnu Mahrizim BaÆzotö, a pounding electro track that has as much of a dance appeal as ▓ªª
ªª▓ it does a militant one through the proclamation of ôI want you!ö Track two for a change has ▓ªª
ªª▓ a rhythmic backbone but features the folk appeal that Bleiburg possesses through a ▓ªª
ªª▓ Mediterranean / Middle Eastern style guitar and female vocal presence while the majority of ▓ªª
ªª▓ voice on the song is spoken word. We then venture into the gently flowing and synth-laden ▓ªª
ªª▓ melodious track ôLa Brigada Majalö. The reference here is towards the roughly 4,000 non- ▓ªª
ªª▓ Israeli Jewish and non-Jewish volunteers whom traveled to Israel to fight for the Jewish ▓ªª
ªª▓ Independence in 1948. ôJerusalemö contains some minimally melodic and playful neoclassic ▓ªª
ªª▓ plucked-string arrangements and refers to the city as ôthe lionÆs gateö, speaking of ôthe ▓ªª
ªª▓ troops edg(e/ing) their way to the temple mountö. ôNever Surrenderö is more straight- ▓ªª
ªª▓ forward aggro-style industrial with a low-end synth melody and a slightly abrasive rhythm. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôSix Daysö incorporates more of a trance influence behind samples speaking about the Six Day ▓ªª
ªª▓ War of June, 1967 that landed Israel full control of the Gaze Strip, Sinai Peninsula, Golan ▓ªª
ªª▓ Heights and the West Bank. All of this, in the first half of the album alone. The rest ▓ªª
ªª▓ will go on to feature the martial percussion and minimal ambient atmosphere of ôLife ▓ªª
ªª▓ Dangerous and Faithö, the tribal and largely Middle Eastern ôAzanö, the epic martial ▓ªª
ªª▓ industrial track ôThe Bar Lev Lineö, and the strangely mystic and lightly breakbeat ôThe ▓ªª
ªª▓ Source of Powerö. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ From its diversity of sound, its serious and intelligent political motivations and its ▓ªª
ªª▓ militant style, ôTill the Last Nightö should please any fan of the martial side of electro, ▓ªª
ªª▓ especially those whom find themselves bored by an albumÆs worth of the same sound over and ▓ªª
ªª▓ over. More than that, itÆs as much a history lesson from an important part of the world as ▓ªª
ªª▓ it is a spirited and unique effort. Obviously anti-Zionist readers will probably see this ▓ªª
ªª▓ as little more than propaganda and thus not find much here that is of interest to them, but ▓ªª
ªª▓ for those whom approach music with an open mind, itÆs quite a rewarding listen. This is, at ▓ªª
ªª▓ least from my perspective, RukavinaÆs best effort since ôWay of Crossesö and will hopefully ▓ªª
ªª▓ re-energize his motivation into a new era for Bleiburg. ▓ªª
