│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ For a while there Bob Catley looked set to go ║ │
│║ down as just another lamb chops lead singer. You ║ │
│║ know what lamb chops are right? ThatÆs the name ║ │
│║ for big ugly side burns from the late ║ │
│║ seventies/early eighties. Think just about any ║ │
│║ NWOBHM band. But Catley got smart and did things ║ │
│║ like this album. He also tapped into a whole new ║ │
│║ generation by appearing on the æAvantasiaÆ ║ │
│║ project just before Sammett switched from power ║ │
│║ metal to unfunny metal. But back to this album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Okay, so Catley does have a raspy voice and some ║ │
│║ staying power. But thatÆs not enough. You need ║ │
│║ good material. So for this album he asked ║ │
│║ someone good to write the whole thing. That guy ║ │
│║ is Gary Hughes of British hard rock heroes Ten. ║ │
│║ They used to be on the archives. And even though ║ │
│║ their entire catalogue sounds exactly like this ║ │
│║ album, theyÆve been taken down. Go figure. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ But back to æThe TowerÆ and how it sums up the ║ │
│║ one thing you need to know about Gary Hughes. ║ │
│║ Everything he writes sounds like itÆs 1989. But ║ │
│║ donÆt let that scare you. Because he has a very ║ │
│║ clever way of not sounding too dated. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ HughesÆ trick is to come up with killer hooks ║ │
│║ that are on the run, wanted in three states and ║ │
│║ any other way you can think of stretching the ║ │
│║ metaphor. In fact the album opener, ôDreamsö is ║ │
│║ serial killer stuff. A low key keyboard and ║ │
│║ acoustic intro barely has time to settle in ║ │
│║ before a flick knife switch to synthesizer rock ║ │
│║ theatrics to accompany Mr. Catley belting out a ║ │
│║ ridiculously catchy verse. And then comes the ║ │
│║ chorus. How good is it? Remember what I said ║ │
│║ about the verse? Double it and double it again. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ For ôScreamö and ôFar Awayö the tempo sways one ║ │
│║ minute and rock hard the next. The hooks have ║ │
│║ stadium anthem written all over them. WeÆre ║ │
│║ talking a choice of either a thousand cigarette ║ │
│║ lighters held up high or a thousand fists ║ │
│║ punching the air. ôDeep Winterö is something ║ │
│║ different again. This one is almost the middle ║ │
│║ America porch song transplanted to a cold and ║ │
│║ bleak English moor. Think a semi-acoustic ║ │
│║ storyteller tune youÆll turn up every time. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ôSteelö is Hughes in storyteller mode one last ║ │
│║ time. The edgy riff is just right for the broken ║ │
│║ tale of broken man revisiting the ruins of his ║ │
│║ childhood home. Once it was the streets where he ║ │
│║ played. Now itÆs an industrial wasteland. ItÆs ║ │
│║ not a slow song, but the shredding does sad and ║ │
│║ hurt anyway. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ LetÆs end with the title track. This oneÆs prog ║ │
│║ for people who donÆt like prog. Not that it goes ║ │
│║ all over the place. What IÆm talking about is a ║ │
│║ jolting vocal hook verse that mirrors the ║ │
│║ struggle of the lyrics. But if the chorus says ║ │
│║ ôThe tower is to defend our loveö, then the ║ │
│║ chorus is the moment the prog fog lifts and the ║ │
│║ tower rises in the shape of yet another classic ║ │
│║ track from a dude that writes them the way some ║ │
│║ people light their very next cigarette û with ║ │
│║ the one theyÆre still smoking. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ After this Catley pumped out 5 more solo albums ║ │
│║ over the next decade. Two more of which were ║ │
│║ written by Hughes. As for Hughes, he hasnÆt ║ │
│║ stopped yet. HeÆs what I call almost metal. I ║ │
│║ can live with that. ║ │
