│║ Wellàehmànice record. That was my first thought ║ │
│║ after the first spin. This changed into 'hmm, ║ │
│║ more than nice', after the second session and ║ │
│║ after the third time I can't find any negative ║ │
│║ thing to say about the debut album of the former ║ │
│║ Dream Theater cover band Astra from Italy. ║ │
│║ Impressive is the way that they shed their Dream ║ │
│║ Theater skin, something not all bands that are ║ │
│║ born from adoration of an example are able to ║ │
│║ do. Singer Titta Tani (also drummer on the ║ │
│║ album) has the leading role because his voice ║ │
│║ can carry a lot of variation; melodic as well as ║ │
│║ aggressive. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I have some slight criticism on the accent here ║ │
│║ an there but it isn't really that noticeable ║ │
│║ really. Of course there are loads of breaks, ║ │
│║ changes in tempo and long stretched instrumental ║ │
│║ passages but still Astra is able to keep my ║ │
│║ attention. One interesting aspect is that the ║ │
│║ band's bassplayer is clearly audible, which is ║ │
│║ not always the case with Dream Theater, as ║ │
│║ brilliant as John Myung may be, he often isn't ║ │
│║ prominently featured in the sound, or am I the ║ │
│║ only one who feels that way? ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Andrea Casali, Astra's bassist (and second ║ │
│║ vocalist) knows how to present himself. ║ │
│║ Keyboardplayer Emanuele Casali also catches the ║ │
│║ attention more than once with original sounds ║ │
│║ and his jazz-like style shows how much can be ║ │
│║ done within the music of Astra. Don't let the ║ │
│║ dark artwork fool you, this album is really ║ │
│║ fine! ║ │
