│║ Coverdale purists are steadfastly defiant that ║ │
│║ prior to 1987 WHITESNAKE where the archetypal ║ │
│║ Blues based Hard Rock band supremely suited to ║ │
│║ the United Kingdom. Coverdale was backed up with ║ │
│║ hard working, no nonsense musicians who each ║ │
│║ brought their own mix to the working class ║ │
│║ theatrics of the main man. The steadfast might ║ │
│║ have thought that but in Æ87 Coverdale sacked ║ │
│║ his band went to the US and bought a new rostra ║ │
│║ of musicians who recorded the multi-million- ║ │
│║ tastic selling æÆ1987ÆÆ album and in one fell ║ │
│║ swoop David Coverdale alienated his hardcore ║ │
│║ fans in favour of hairspray, latex and the ║ │
│║ American dream. That he re-recorded two of the ║ │
│║ æSNAKES best and well known tracks didnÆt seem ║ │
│║ to bother the legendary lothario or indeed his ║ │
│║ bank manager as the green backs poured in. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So with the brief history lesson dispensed the ║ │
│║ 2006 WHITESNAKE albeit with only Coverdale as ║ │
│║ the sole keeper of the flame has released a new ║ │
│║ live record based firmly on the bands popularity ║ │
│║ after a couple well received UK tours. For all ║ │
│║ intents those going to a WHITESNAKE show are ║ │
│║ there to see and hear Coverdale but it dangerous ║ │
│║ to assume that the talent he has surrounded ║ │
│║ himself with is anything less than entertaining ║ │
│║ and exciting. The mercurial Tommy Aldridge ║ │
│║ continues to bash the skins with a wanton ║ │
│║ abandon that leaves those half his age stare in ║ │
│║ awe and wonder. Drum solos are mind bogglingly ║ │
│║ boring for the most part but without sticks ║ │
│║ Aldridge has cornered the market. And seasoned ║ │
│║ traveller Doug Aldrich wields the guitar just as ║ │
│║ passionately as Vandenberg or Marsden ever did. ║ │
│║ The obligatory narcissistic guitar solo does ║ │
│║ grate but Aldrich is a fine player nonetheless. ║ │
│║ ║ │

│║ With a catalogue of songs that coils all the way ║ │
│║ back to his tenure with DEEP PURPLE Coverdale ║ │
│║ and the æSNAKE can hardly fail to impress. From ║ │
│║ the sprightly opening of æÆBad BoysÆÆ through ║ │
│║ the adolescent immaturity of æÆSlide It InÆÆ and ║ │
│║ æÆSlow & EasyÆÆ WHITESNAKE take to the stage ║ │
│║ with alacrity and bombast. There isnÆt a duff ║ │
│║ track here to be truthful. The classics keep on ║ │
│║ coming with Coverdale just managing to keep that ║ │
│║ famous howl on the level. Time might have aged ║ │
│║ his soulful and beguiling timbre but he can ║ │
│║ still pull off the triumvirate of æÆFool For ║ │
│║ Your LovingÆÆ, æÆHere I Go AgainÆÆ and æÆStill ║ │
│║ Of The Night æÆ with ease and composure. He ║ │
│║ might lose a bit of power on æÆCrying In The ║ │
│║ RainÆÆ but the timeless quality of æÆAinÆt No ║ │
│║ Love In The Heart Of The CityÆÆ quickly dispels ║ │
│║ any notion that his voice is wavering. ║ │

│║ Revisiting old times with the PURPLE classics ║ │
│║ æÆBurn and StormbringerÆÆ heightens an already ║ │
│║ enjoyable show. As does the Melodic pomp of ║ │
│║ æÆGive Me All Your Love TonightÆÆ and æÆThe ║ │
│║ Deeper The LoveÆÆ Whilst the class of æÆReady & ║ │
│║ WillingÆÆ and an ostentatious rendering of ║ │
│║ æÆWalking In The Shadow of The BluesÆÆ could ║ │
│║ make brave men weep. ║ │

│║ ItÆs been nearly ten years since WHITESNAKE the ║ │
│║ band recorded any new material and that matter ║ │
│║ has been addressed with four songs written by ║ │
│║ Coverdale and Aldrich and although they donÆt ║ │
│║ quite reach the glories of yesteryear thereÆs ║ │
│║ certainly enough in the BLACKMORE inspired ║ │
│║ riffing of æÆReady To RockÆÆ the heavy laden ║ │
│║ riff of æÆIf You Want MeÆÆ the wistful melody of ║ │
│║ æÆAll I Want Is YouÆÆ and drive of æÆDogÆÆ to ║ │
│║ make a new WHITESNAKE album something to praise ║ │
│║ instead of despairing of. ║ │

│║ Plying his trade since the 1970Æs Coverdale is a ║ │
│║ true Rock survivor and WHITESNAKE one of the ║ │
│║ classic Hard Rock bands. This live album is ║ │
│║ therefore a fitting testimony to timeless, ║ │
│║ anthem coated Rock music regardless of the merry ║ │
│║ go round of personnel involved. ║ │
