"El Tiempo de la Revolución expresses the successive
revo-lu-tions through which our lives are chron-icled, like
a long poem written during the course of time, in a place
where we are at once both actors and spec-tators." Erik
Truffaz
One of the most awaited jazz albums of the year for me was
Erik Truffaz Quartet's `El Tiempo De La Revolución', which
had been released in late October this year. With his
quartet, Truffaz has developed an exclusive sound, where his
trumpet hung out with hip hop and electro (The Dawn, Bending
New Corners) with rock (Walk of the Giant Turtle), and pop
(Arkhangelsk, In Between) along with jazz. After having
shifted towards more acoustic music, the tenth album (for
the Blue Note label) - El Tiempo de la Revolución does not
break the continuum. Truffaz's poetic and usually economical
trumpet playing portrays the revolutions that we have in
every day life rather than a massive transformation.
Marcello, Marc and Benoit add depth and rhythm to the whole
and they invite us to a journey into the heavy and foggy
atmosphere.
The opener `El Tiempo de la Revolución' is a tribute to
Ennio Morricone whose songs are based on slow, martial
rhythms and reminiscent melodies that emphasize especially
the timbre of the trumpet. The revolution actually starts
with this song and resonates with `Revolution of Time',
which closes the album. `El Tiempo de la Revolución' begins
gently and soon turns into a cry. Benoit's keyboard sets the
scene while Erbetta's beats are the marching voice of the
revolution. Truffaz tells the story with his long notes
along with Marcello's basslines expressing the inner voice.
`Revolution of Time', on the contrary, is a ballad with a
soft piano and smooth trumpet.
Contrary to its name, `Istanbul Tango' is not a tango but
an almost funky song. It consists of simple electronic beats
that provide a background for Truffaz to flavor it with his
delicate improvizations while Benoit's Fender Rhodes
accompanies the funky basslines of Marcello. When Truffaz
told me that Istanbul feels like the tango, I couldn't make
the connection at first, however, after listening to the
song while wandering in the back streets of Istanbul, I
think I understood what he meant. Although life is quite
chaotic in Istanbul with its over 18 million population,
traffic and governmental problems, one still continues to
live there passionately so it is really like dancing the
tango. Having strolled in the streets, one goes unnoticed in
the crowd through the end of the song.
In the `African Mist', you can find yourself in the dark
green forests of Africa and feel the mist of the waterfalls
as the title suggests. The keyboard is really good at
creating a dreamlike atmosphere and the trumpet sounds like
the soul of the forest with its soothing melodies that are
accompanied by Marc's beautiful African rhythms.
`La Luna Mentirosa' and `Un Soufflé Qui Passe' are the most
difficult songs in the album to start humming after
listening for a couple of times. The first one reminds me of
Chet Baker, which is hard to tell why, but it may well be
the laid-back trumpet playing of Truffaz as the song is so
soothing. The latter is an experimental track in my opinion
but still keeping the nice dialogue between the piano and
the trumpet.
`Mr K' is the funkiest song in the album that can well be
the brother of "Trippin' the Lovelight Fantastic" in
`Arkhangelsk. It characterizes Laurent Klunge, the manager
of the band, as an active and practical man as the groove in
the song never slows down. I can imagine him running back
and forth during the band's tour. Let the groove go on! (And
I can't help envying him as he is always with the band :)
I think the collaborations between pop artists and Truffaz
are usually successful. For this album, they worked with a
young and talented Swiss singer, Anna Aaron, with whom they
had been already touring before the album release. She has a
characteristic voice with a deep and soft timbre that first
she showed with the album's first single `Blow Away'. `Blue
Movie' is my favourite in the album with its story-like
lyrics and melancholic composition. `Your bruises still
remind you, off the rest you should never take' sings Anna
after a love lost. `A Better Heart' is Anna's own
composition that strangely fits the album as it is not like
the Quartet's own songs but does not fall very far from pop
jazz.
The first time I listened to the album was in the morning
when I was on my way to work in our shuttle, accompanied by
dark clouds, light rain and the undecisive sun. As soon as I
heard the first song in the album, I took a different route,
diving head first into a world of nu jazz tranquility that
led me into the off-the-beaten-track places. The strength of
the album is to navigate between feelings and images as it
seems to be written for a nonexistent movie. In my opinion,
`El Tiempo de la Revolución' is a peaceful and serene
harbour to take refuge in this chaotic world.
