Putting aside the fact that Jesse Dee's haircut might make him look like a
dandelion about to go to seed, the young neo-soul and R&B singer from Boston has
put out a second album of self-penned songs that are so well written, so
amazingly arranged and performed, you'll wonder why this guy doesn't just own
the music business. At the very least, prepare to say "Bruno who?" after hearing
these 11 cuts, which find their artistic roots in classic R&B of the '60s and
'70s, with the kind of thoroughly contemporary vision that made Amy Winehouse
great. With a compellingly rough-edged tenor, Dee delivers authenticity with
every note, whether on joyous love songs such as the title work, the
reggae-tinged "Fussin' and Fightin' " or classic R&B laments such as "Tell Me
(Before It's Too Late)." The guitar work, by Johnny Trama and Dee, is crazy
great, as are Eli Wunderman's wailing Hammond B3 organ and John Aruda and Paul
Ahlstrand on sax and Benjamin Zeck on vibes. Dee's 2009 album "Bittersweet
Batch" is merely fantastic. The new CD is such a masterpiece, I'd even move back
to Boston just to hear him live.
