The late, great Swedish bassist Bj÷rn Alke, who used to provide
accompaniment to various american jazz celebrities visiting Sweden, once
stated a bit provocatively (tongue-in-cheek), that "the main role of the
horn soloist is to electrify the rhythm section!" Now in his 75th year,
the tenor saxophonist Bernt Rosengren, with his sharp and driving playing,
certainly stands up to that demand, always maintaining effective,
rewarding interplay with the pianist and bassist and staying in close
rapport, not least with the drummer. Thus, the music of Rosengren's
quartet is a work of reciprocal exchange in which each player influences
the others - and isn't that by definition what a jazz group is all about?
Rosengren has long been widely recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist
and a magnificent composer and arranger. Over the years he has led various
groups of his own and these days he can often be heard with his excellent
quartet - their previous CD ("I'm Flying") was awarded The Golden Disc for
best Swedish jazz album of 2009. The rhythm section consists of the most
versatile musicians: pianist Stefan Gustafson (b.1967) and a
state-of-the-art team of bassist Hans Backenroth (b.1966) and drummer
Bengt Stark (b. 1962). This new CD has an all-Swedish repertoire, hence
the title. Each tune has its own significant charactheristics and is, at
the same time, most suitable as a vehicle for jazz improvisation.
The opening GOOD MORNING is a "swinger" with a catchy melody and the
typical rhythmic spark
ever-present in Bernt Rosengren's music. He first recorded it in 1988 for
an album under the leadership of American guitarist Doug Raney.
