despite his tiny parisian home-studio, christian charles keeps the
window open to a great variety of influences. his main sources of
inspiration come from jazz and soul - giants like coltrane,
scott-heron - but also from uprising stars like roni size,
jazzanova or ninja tune artists as amon tobin.
he feeds his music with samples originating from selected
recordings including obscure indian ragas or trumpeting big-band
pipes, coupling them with vintage synths and rare groove breaks.
the 12 inch opens with "interferences", reminiscent of thievery
corporation productions, then comes "kingstoned" and its smoky
vibes and dubby effects - imagine the jb's mixed by lee perry.
flip and you discover "plein soleil", destined to ease your waking
up at the sound of a recipe for le bonheur. ending with
"jazzanthrope", a fine example of what that nu-jazz thing should
be.
