grupo batuque are a batucada collective, members include wilson
des neves (president of the escola de samba imperio serrano),
mamao (drummer with azymuth),dom chacal , zezinho, robertinho
silva, aleuda, aparacedinha, leo leobonz (percussionist with mongo
     santamaria and fania all stars)

the most important exponent of the rio carnival is the music:
samba and batucada. traditionally, there are a variety of rhythms
(stemming from african roots) that make up samba music. samba
schools of 2000 percussionists each parade during the carnival
challenging each other. the ubiquitous samba beat- heard
throughout brazil offers the most powerful and elemental
invitations to dance. hard to resist, samba rhythms have been
increasingly incorporated in modern house and dance music by the
likes of maw, basement jaxx, faze action, 4hero, ian pooley,
     jazzanova.

in 1997 during the three long hot days of carnival, far out
recordings hired a studio, and commandeered some of the finest
percussionists and musicians from the local favelas and samba
schools. the result is æsamba de ruaÆ, an album of rural street
batucadas and samba, capturing the music and atmosphere of the
     carnival.

æsamba de ruaÆ, was followed by æsamba de futebolÆ, a brazilian
soundtrack to the 1998 world cup which combines brazil's two
biggest passions , music and football, featuring atmospheric live
recordings from the two biggest football stadiums in brazil - the
maracarna (rio) and morumbi (sao paulo) - heavy batucadas and
funky sambas powerful enough to cheer any team to victory.

the latest album æafrica brazilÆ, sets out to trace the angolan
roots of brazilian music as the name suggests. the atmosphere is
set with live capoeira, drumming and baiano chanting. from raw and
unadorned vocal-drum tracks, through to truly bahian afro
brazilica. the record traces the forever changing landscape of
brazilian music: the journey starts with the very beginnings of
samba, whose predecessor arrived washed up on the coasts of bahia
as worship and freedom songs. out of the newly arrived african
culture came the orixia based religion candomble and the martial
art of capoeira. examples of the spiritual music used to accompany
these, can be found on the album. the album also features the
voice of aleuda singing jongos - a highly improvisational form of
ceremonial music brought from ghana. other vocalists are sergao
and aperacidinha from the favelas of madariera on the northern
outskirts of rio. aperacidhinha has set up a school in the favelas
for the jongo ritual, performed originally at funerals and
celebrations. the track ækeyzer' which is dedicated to banda black
rio (brazil's premier afro funk group of the 70's and friends of
batuque members) and fela kuti, fuses the fela rhythm and groove,
but keeps the samba through the 'gaffeira' melodies of the horn
section. remixed in 2000 by maw, 'keyzer' has been a huge hit in
clubs from new york, to tokyo and london.
