■ Release Notes:
Following on from their Six Mocha Shots
series of singles (which have been
reviewed elsewhere on this blog)
Saitama's finest funk outfit, Mountain
Mocha Kilimanjaro, have released a new
album which is a covers project featuring
all of the tracks featured on the B-sides
of the singles they've released to date
plus a couple of others.
Going by the title of Taking A Lesson
From The Past, the album features a total
of eleven tunes all given an authentic
old school funky twist in the band's own
distinct style. Over the course of the
album they dip into the songbooks of Jimi
Hendrix, Herbie Hancook, Bob Marley, The
Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Blackbyrds,
Van Halen, Stevie Wonder and more. And
while the orginals come from a very wide
variety of genres, they're all given a
real heavy and hip workover sure to
please the funk crowd.
It all makes for a great listen, but the
real standout tracks are the opening
Power Of Soul, the version of Sebastian
Williams' Get Your Point Over, K.I.T.T.
(Knight Rider Main Title), the perennial
live favourite Immigrant Song and the
Meters-like rework of the the Bob Marley
classic Exodus.
A fine funk feast from one of the best
bands on the Japanese live circuit. Well
worth checking out.
