ItÆs been a year since the release of Part 1 of ôDigging the Blogosphereö. We had no
idea at the time that the adventure would continue. What we did realize, though, was
that something ground-breaking was happening on the net, that the web wasnÆt just a
jungle full of pirates shamelessly raiding music, but instead an open space that
allows a whole new generation of artists to display their talents and showcase their
music, direct and unmediated, away from record companies with their urge to format
everything û and, above all, ten steps ahead of the majors. Soundcloud, Bandcamp,
Mixcloud and a galaxy of blogs scattered across the Internet were one great big
playground for music fanatics like us. Like many other people, we noticed that we
were spending more and more time panning the continuous stream of tracks posted
online worldwide every day in search of precious nuggets. We were a new kind of
digger. Each and every day a producer, a beatmaker, a tinkerman, a DJ, a singer, a
musician or a new band burst onto the scene. Such is the growth of this phenomenon
that EPs and even whole albums are put on the web as free downloads. In 2012, for the
very first time, the charts featured as many projects that had only been released as
MP3s on the web as conventionally produced albums. Did any hip-hop fan not put Joey
BadassÆs ô1999ö on his or her list of tracks of the year? The other consequence or
evidence of the fact that tomorrowÆs music is to be found first and foremost on the
Internet is that the bolder record labels now look to the web for new artists to sign
up (Frank Ocean being the most eloquent example). Internet has completely changed the
rules and ushered in a new era, not just for the worse (as some people would have us
think) because it is hard to think of a time when the world of music fizzed with
invention like this. The aim of this second volume of ôDigging the Blogosphereö is
not to reveal the next James Blake, even though all the artists in this compilation
would merit his success. Like last year, we just wanted to share our excitement about
this new musical scene with a selection of our recent ôcyber favouritesö: future
beats, jazz, electronica, hip- hop and soul. ôDigging the Blogosphereö û the
adventure has only just begun.
