│║ IÆd like to introduce you to a band thatÆs been ║ │
│║ laying low on the power metal circuit for a ║ │
│║ while: Heimdall. Heimdall has been around for ║ │
│║ nearly twenty years, previously releasing four ║ │
│║ full length albums, with a few lineup changes ║ │
│║ here and there. The band cycled into their third ║ │
│║ vocalist most recently in 2011. This change, in ║ │
│║ my humble opinion, was their best move yet. With ║ │
│║ HeimdallÆs release of their fifth full length, ║ │
│║ Aeneid (nine years in the making), I am without ║ │
│║ a doubt impressed and surprisingly blown away. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ DonÆt get me wrong, Heimdall has released some ║ │
│║ great power metal material with past line-ups ║ │
│║ but, it seems to me that they have found their ║ │
│║ dream team line-up here. The songwriting is ║ │
│║ confident and strong, while past albums felt a ║ │
│║ little weak. Aeneid is catchy, producing hooks ║ │
│║ never seen or heard from this band before, with ║ │
│║ production quality being very professional and ║ │
│║ spot on for epic power metal.ItÆs their greatest ║ │
│║ material yet, and fans of previous albums will ║ │
│║ be pleasantly surprised with their new, modern ║ │
│║ sound.s ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The leading song to the intro, ôForced By Fateö ║ │
│║ begins with a strong orchestrated keyboard ║ │
│║ intro, moving quickly into a heavy-rhythm guitar ║ │
│║ riff. Before it gives you any time to calm down, ║ │
│║ the vocals of sir Gandalf Ferro begin, combined ║ │
│║ with the layered choir-like vocals, a near ║ │
│║ heavenly experience occurs. ôSave Youö follows ║ │
│║ just as strong as the track before it and ║ │
│║ produces a chorus that is sure to stick with you ║ │
│║ long after itÆs over. The keyboard work is ║ │
│║ phenomenal. While the drums are very typical of ║ │
│║ those found in power metal, the bass work needs ║ │
│║ itÆs own spotlight to shine. You can hear it ║ │
│║ slightly, but itÆs too faint in the powerful ║ │
│║ presence of the guitar. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ôBallad of the Queenö slows things down a bit, ║ │
│║ while still remaining a rather strong presence ║ │
│║ on the album. ItÆs nice to see a slower, more ║ │
│║ romantic side to these Italian metallers. With a ║ │
│║ strong sense of regret and longing, ôWhy did you ║ │
│║ find rest in my shores?ö this is a sincere, ║ │
│║ powerful, and emotional song. The band ends this ║ │
│║ song in a very unique way, with a beautiful a ║ │
│║ capella vocal piece. ║ │
│║ One of my favorite tracks on the album is ôHeroö ║ │
│║ as the last half of the song has a great ║ │
│║ conversation between lead and backing vocals. To ║ │
│║ top of the killer guitar solo, machine gun drum ║ │
│║ rolls, and keyboard work throughout the entire ║ │
│║ song, that last particular vocal spotlight is ║ │
│║ amazing. ôAwayö is a short lived, yet beautiful ║ │
│║ filler song. The piano work is phenomenal, but ║ │
│║ what completely steals the show is the layers of ║ │
│║ vocals harmonized perfectly. When Ferro comes in ║ │
│║ for his spotlight, a tear came to my eye. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The album continues to grow and get stronger as ║ │
│║ it continues on. It is refreshing to hear an ║ │
│║ album that doesnÆt wear-out itÆs strength solely ║ │
│║ in the beginning. Heimdall nailed this release. ║ │
│║ Aeneid without a doubt has the ability to ║ │
│║ compete with some of the larger power metal ║ │
│║ albums recently released this year. The album ║ │
│║ rolls through highs and lows of pride, pain, ║ │
│║ love and loss. Despite the emotions it pulls out ║ │
│║ of you, it maintains a strong, epic power metal ║ │
│║ presence. Aeneid is absolutely a great release, ║ │
│║ worthy of a purchase from any power metal fan, ║ │
│║ and is in the running to be one of the best ║ │
│║ power metal albums of 2013. ║ │
