│║ At The Dawn is a fledgling power metal group ║ │
│║ from Bologna, Italy, that, perhaps not ║ │
│║ surprisingly, has a strong affinity for the ║ │
│║ themes of dawn and dusk. ItÆs the title, sure, ║ │
│║ but the words also creep into most of the songs, ║ │
│║ as well as many song titles. Unfortunately, ║ │
│║ without lyrics and not willing to put too much ║ │
│║ time into deciphering the moderately heavy ║ │
│║ Italian accent, thatÆs as specific as IÆm going ║ │
│║ to be able to get. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I wasnÆt quite sure what to make of this at ║ │
│║ first, but my overall reaction has been fairly ║ │
│║ lukewarm. Put simply, At The Dawn doesnÆt have ║ │
│║ too much to offer musically (I feel) to the ║ │
│║ greater power metal community, but there are a ║ │
│║ couple of very good songs, most notably ║ │
│║ ôBalthazarö and ôAt The Dawnö. Even these tracks ║ │
│║ donÆt stack up favorably to frontrunners though, ║ │
│║ and thereÆs considerable work to be done in the ║ │
│║ realm of memorability, if At The Dawn ever wants ║ │
│║ to truly contend. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Vocalist Stefano de Marco, for example, while ║ │
│║ having a good voice and reasonably good ║ │
│║ delivery, never commands the passion and ║ │
│║ conviction that I consider necessary for great ║ │
│║ singers. His accent can be a bit bumbling at ║ │
│║ times, but itÆs not unforgivable next to many of ║ │
│║ his infamous countrymen. HeÆs also ║ │
│║ indistinguishable from ôgeneric Italian power ║ │
│║ metal singer Xö, and IÆd never be able to pick ║ │
│║ him out of a crowd. The guitars are similar û ║ │
│║ there are a few good licks here and there, and ║ │
│║ in particular some great chorus support, but ║ │
│║ itÆs not consistent. Rhythm lines are relatively ║ │
│║ dull and thereÆs a lack of impressive soloing ║ │
│║ that is pretty much necessary to make a truly ║ │
│║ strong power metal record. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While this isnÆt a completely uncreative, ║ │
│║ straight-on double bass endeavor, the drums and ║ │
│║ bass are nearly completely unremarkable, and ║ │
│║ definitely donÆt offer up anything for the rest ║ │
│║ of the group to take off on. There are also a ║ │
│║ couple of sound samples on this album, and while ║ │
│║ I donÆt mind the inevitable ôone small step for ║ │
│║ man, one giant leap for mankindö quote at the ║ │
│║ outset of ôCountdown To Infinityö, the accented ║ │
│║ countdown during the actual SONG is unnecessary, ║ │
│║ distracting, and just poor. Likewise, a pet ║ │
│║ peeve of mine appears on the short and utterly ║ │
│║ pointless ôAriÆs Melodyö. DonÆt get me wrong, ║ │
│║ thereÆs a very proper place for childrenÆs ║ │
│║ music, and it can be cute. This is just random ║ │
│║ and silly. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ From Dawn To Dusk has its perks, and for those ║ │
│║ who enjoy fairly basic power metal, this is ║ │
│║ reasonably enjoyable. I admittedly tend to favor ║ │
│║ heavier, proggier, or more outright memorable ║ │
│║ material though, and so I canÆt help but feel ║ │
│║ that thereÆs no harm at all in passing this ║ │
│║ album up. It made for an interesting couple of ║ │
│║ listens, but I am left with the distinct need to ║ │
│║ reach for something more fulfilling. ║ │
