A third Billy Mahonie album on a third label, Dust is
also a quite radical departure from what has come
before. After two lengthy, sprawling affairs (The Big
Dig and What Becomes Before), Dust sees the reconfigured
London four-piece focus their attention on five extended
instrumental pieces, and succeed admirably. Founder
members Gavin Baker (guitar) and Howard Monk (drums) are
joined by ex-Stereolab bassist Duncan Brown (who had
previously played with Monk in Luke Sutherland's Bows)
and guitarist Anthony Barratt. Thus the trademark twin-
bass attack of former members Hywell Dinsdale and Kevin
Penney is notably absent, in its place a more
experimental but no less compelling soundscape,
exemplified in the epic, swooning beauty of the title
track, 'No Blood For Dust'.. Only for the last of its
eleven minutes do the guitars threaten to overload, the
previous ten an exercise in melodic understatement,
graced by Anosha Brown's haunting flute and some
consummate interplay by the four-piece. The folk
leanings of Baker, as heard on his Meets Guitar side
project, come to the fore on the short Semapho, a
glowing example of what can be done in the name of
folktronica (and for which Mahonie coin the term
GlitchFolk), before the band let loose on the down and
dirty AC/DC-go-math-rock vent of Red Crow. Book-ending
these are the lyrical opener 'We Almost Totally Died' -
another exemplary, apparently telepathically conceived
musical excursion - and the closing, suitably narcotic
embrace of Lullaby. With plaudits aplenty currently
being bestowed upon the likes of Explosions in the Sky
and their canadian cousins, only the most vindictive
anglophobe would deny Billy Mahonie the right to claim a
deserved place at the vanguard of instrumental music.
-Comes With a Smile
Taking their name from the boy who haunts Kiefer
Sutherlands in Joel Schumachers's 1990 movie Flatliners,
London's Billy Mahonie have remained one of the most
underrated post-rock bands for some time now. Whilst
comrades like Mogwai and Tortoise et. al. have taken the
glory over the years with their instrumental shards of
sonic abuse, Billy Mahonie have remained on the
periphery despite two stunning albums, 2001's
mesmerising 'What Becomes Before' in particular, and a
myriad of singles and EPs. With their third album
they've evolved once more: a line-up change and a new
home. 'Dust' is Mahonie once again in fine fettle as
they unfurl five meticulously crafted and luscious
atmospheric soundscapes. Tracks like the 'No Blood For
Dust' sum up Mahonie's musical talent perfectly, a
sprawling epic that quite simply pisses over anything
produced by any of their compadres in sound. Essential
listening? Fuck yes! -Rock Sound
