According to member Kenny Stover, Finished Touch wasn't really a
group at all, just a bunch of guys and gals signed to songwriting
contracts with Jobete Music (Motown Records publishing wing) that
somebody decided to assemble as a studio group to give life to some
of the songs the members wrote. Finished Touch's lineup consisted of
Stover, Harold Johnson, Michael McGloiry, Larry Brown, and Brenda
and Mike Sutton. Their only LP, Need to Know You Better, dropped
July 1978, a month prior to the single "Stick and Stones" b/w
"Strokin'" The LP's ten songs came from the group members' in
various combinations or individually.
Stover's "I Love To See You Dance" (MOT-1449) a funk piece that
would have hit bigger had Motown shown any interest. Their third
single was the same as the second (?) but with a different flip,
"Trying To Kick The Habit" (MOT-1453), a Larry Brown/Terri McFaddin
tune. Three good singles, but high chart success eluded them. Two
new singles: "Down Sound" and "Roll-Her Skater" from 1979 were last
straws; Motown shelved a second album. Finished Touch recorded some
good sides even if they weren't a group in the truest sense of the
word..
It's possible to be a major expert on 1970s R&B and be unfamiliar
with Finished Touch, an obscure, short-lived disco/funk/soul outfit
that was led by vocalist/producer Kenny Stover and featured singers
Brenda and Michael Sutton. The vast majority of R&B fans have never
even heard of the group, whose only album, "Need To Know You
Better", fell through the cracks and didn't do much commercially.
Motown didn't promote the record as aggressively as it should have,
and it went out of print after only a few years. Nonetheless, this
is a generally competent, if unfocused, debut. Occasionally,
Finished Touch delivers a real gem, the intoxicating disco/funk
single "I Love to See You Dance" is excellent, and the group fares
almost as well on the Parliament-minded funk ditty "Sticks and
Stones". Also noteworthy is the dreamy, slightly Earth, Wind &
Fire-ish "Sunshine Love". Unfortunately, Finished Touch fails to be
distinctive and never establishes a firm identity of its own, the
group cannot decide if it wants to be Chic, Parliament/Funkadelic,
Rose Royce, or Earth, Wind & Fire. But as unfocused as this LP is,
none of the songs are bad. About 20 percent of the material is
first-rate, and the other 80 percent is at least decent.
