Omar's independently released British single, 1990's There's
Nothing Like This, seemed to guarantee him success in his
adopted homeland. The classically trained Omar, descended
from Jamaican, Chinese, and Indian stock, had spent most of
his life studying in the city of Canterbury and released the
laid-back "There's Nothing Like This" on his father's Kongo
Dance label. The song's success sparked an intense interest
in homegrown British street soul, with record companies
gobbling up similar acts. However, when Omar released a
critically acclaimed follow-up album, Music, it flopped.
Omar's new label, Talkin' Loud, blamed the failure on his
sophisticated, complex arrangements, so Omar left for RCA.
On For Pleasure, Omar brought in talents like Stevie Wonder,
Lamont Dozier, and Marvin Gaye arranger Leon Ware, resulting
in a fusion of British and American soul sensibilities and
greater success. The album also contained Omar's first U.S.
single, "Saturday." This Is Not a Love Song followed in
1997.
Note: Omar-Best_By_Far-2000-EGO contains only 14 tracks,
opposed to our Fifteen. Also, their version of "Be
Thankful" features Erykah Badu, while ours features Angie
Stone! This album was re-issued on Spun this year with the
