│║ 2000, itÆs now the turn of Rock Candy Records to ║ │
│║ give this debut album from British pomp rockers ║ │
│║ Grand Prix the (quality) re-issue treatment. ║ │
│║ Things started for Grand Prix in 1978 when Phil ║ │
│║ Lanzon answered an ad in Melody Maker, placed by ║ │
│║ Mick OÆ Donoghue (g) and Ralph Hood (b), who ║ │
│║ were searching for a keyboard player. Mick had ║ │
│║ already written a lot of songs when Phil joined ║ │
│║ and together they wrote more material. The ║ │
│║ difficulty was to find a suitable vocalist. A ║ │
│║ few British singers were tried out, but it ║ │
│║ didnÆt work. By a mere fluke, Canadian born ║ │
│║ Bernie Shaw decided to try his luck in the UK ║ │
│║ and in practically no time he landed the job of ║ │
│║ vocalist with Grand Prix. The band û who also ║ │
│║ included drummer Roger Nutting at the time û was ║ │
│║ now ready to hit the pubs and the clubs in and ║ │
│║ around London and Oxford. Soon it became clear ║ │
│║ that Nutting was not the ideal drummer for the ║ │
│║ band and he was exchanged by Andy Beirne. The ║ │
│║ popularity of the band rose steadily and it was ║ │
│║ decided to record a demo, which eventually led ║ │
│║ to a deal with RCA. Until then the band was ║ │
│║ named Paris, but the moniker was changed into ║ │
│║ Grand Prix right before signing the deal for 3 ║ │
│║ albums. With (the rather unknown) producer Greg ║ │
│║ Walsh the band entered the Marcus Studios where ║ │
│║ they recorded their self-titled debut album. ║ │
│║ For a debut album, ôGrand Prixö was surely OK, ║ │
│║ but the two albums that followed û ôThere For ║ │
│║ None To Seeö (1982) and ôSamuraiö (1983) û ║ │
│║ sounded a lot more consistently. Having said ║ │
│║ that however, itÆs still a pleasure to listen to ║ │
│║ tracks like the upbeat pair of ôWaiting For The ║ │
│║ Nightö and ôThinking Of Youö, the rocker ôMama ║ │
│║ Sayesö, the ballad ôWhich Way Did The Wind Blowö ║ │
│║ and the by Queen inspired ôWest Windö. Three ║ │
│║ bonus tracks have been added to this 24-bit ║ │
│║ remastered re-issue: a non LP B-side of ôWhich ║ │
│║ Way Did The Wind Blowö, called ôFeels Goodö and ║ │
│║ two unreleased demos: ôRoom 155ö and ôSomewhere ║ │
│║ Tonightö. In the inlay you can read some comment ║ │
│║ from Phil Lanzon on each of those extra tracks ║ │
│║ plus û of course û the always interesting liner ║ │
│║ notes, this time written by Phil Ashcroft. Like ║ │
│║ I said: a good debut album, but certainly not ║ │
│║ essential! ║ │
