ªª▓ ItÆs been a few years now since Norbert Strahl walked away from Dies Natalis and began to ▓ªª
ªª▓ focus more on his already successful project in Seelenthron and this wonderful new project, ▓ªª
ªª▓ within which ù in its current incarnation ù he performs alongside of a number of lesser ▓ªª
ªª▓ known artists including fellow former Dies Natalis member Mario Krieg, as well as Mario ▓ªª
ªª▓ Storch, Julia Wnetrzak and Stephan Richter. This marks a considerable change in their ▓ªª
ªª▓ personnel from the dΘbut album Haldor on AustriaÆs Heimtafolk which contained additional ▓ªª
ªª▓ instrumentation from Elisa Oertelt, Robert Heinke, and Martin Schulze. The vocal and cello ▓ªª
ªª▓ pieces for the album were produced, once again, by the skillful ears of NorbertÆs partner in ▓ªª
ªª▓ Seelenthron, Alexander Meier, at ZK-Studio Rennersdorf, while the rest was recorded, mixed, ▓ªª
ªª▓ and mastered by Mario Storch ù both of which did an admirable job in keeping the individual ▓ªª
ªª▓ performances unpolished enough to sound uncompressed and organic, allowing sounds to breathe ▓ªª
ªª▓ and create the stunningly rich compositions that are demanded of the project when taking ▓ªª
ªª▓ into account the relevant time period (early 20th century / World War I era) and the folk ▓ªª
ªª▓ music that comes with it. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ This album is both in dedication to and inspired by the poetry of StrahlÆs great ▓ªª
ªª▓ grandfather, Georg Thom, whose poetry also ended up as the lionÆs share of lyrical content ▓ªª
ªª▓ in the album ù all of which, at least the poems taken for this specific release ù were ▓ªª
ªª▓ written in the years during WWI. For those whom donÆt speak German, there are unfortunately ▓ªª
ªª▓ no lyrics supplied outside of ôGedenkenö and ôRosengrussö, which are both obscured in part ▓ªª
ªª▓ by the background colors of the artwork and the hand-written style of the text. Fear not, ▓ªª
ªª▓ however, as the emotion from every track comes through in brilliant detail, with the ▓ªª
ªª▓ Germanic romanticism that StrahlÆs projects are known for taking center stage, this time ▓ªª
ªª▓ through the war-torn gaze of a soldier in the midst of a changing world and time when ▓ªª
ªª▓ technology was beginning to give birth to frightening new advances in military might ù all ▓ªª
ªª▓ the while maintaining his sanity and love. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ The album opens with a contemporary reworking of the German folk song ôAm Weg dort Hinterm ▓ªª
ªª▓ Zaunö, which was originally composed by Hans Baumann in the 1930's and sets the stage for ▓ªª
ªª▓ this poetic march into remembrance. Immediately, weÆre thrown into a world of colorful ▓ªª
ªª▓ emotive melodies, painting streaks of black melancholy in ôAbend auf Rⁿgenö and Spring-like ▓ªª
ªª▓ pastel yellows and blues of contentment, calm and pride in the surprisingly gentle yet still ▓ªª
ªª▓ martial ôSoldatenliedö (ôSoldiers Songö). ItÆs a call away from the horrors of war and ▓ªª
ªª▓ towards the fonder moments of comradery in those days, marching through fields with the Sun ▓ªª
ªª▓ shining down on the faces of the weary, offering a warmth that is no doubt in sparse supply ▓ªª
ªª▓ on the front lines. The most serious side of Stein doesnÆt manifest until the desperate and ▓ªª
ªª▓ hopeless sounding ôDoppelh÷he 60? which almost borders on a depressive, neoclassically- ▓ªª
ªª▓ tinged doom-folk that ends with the sudden blast of a mortar round; a brilliant track filled ▓ªª
ªª▓ with tension and gloom. Lighter moments on the record include the track ôH÷henflugö which ▓ªª
ªª▓ sounds surprisingly straight-forward, bass-heavy, and accessible like some of the music that ▓ªª
ªª▓ Rome has put out in recent years. ItÆs light both in mood and in the sense that the music ▓ªª
ªª▓ itself is sky-born; calm, relaxed, existing above the world hidden by clouds. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ The latter third of the album is unfortunately a bit of a struggle and, despite the ▓ªª
ªª▓ brilliance of the first two-thirds, achieves little in continuing the great atmosphere and ▓ªª
ªª▓ emotional quality until the eleventh hour. ôHerbstö comes off as sloppily played yet also ▓ªª
ªª▓ overly simplistic and sounds almost like an alternative rock song that youÆd hear on any ▓ªª
ªª▓ modern radio station. ôVerlorener Postenö showcases a fairly run-of-the-mill neofolk effort ▓ªª
ªª▓ as it is help up to the rest of the album, and perhaps shows that the albumÆs total length ▓ªª
ªª▓ was perhaps a little too long. The album does end on a bit of a strong spot though, with ▓ªª
ªª▓ the minimal yet still somehow lush stringed arrangement and melodic female vocals of ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôRosengrussö as well as the return of that ambiguously fiery martial atmosphere in the ▓ªª
ªª▓ closer, ôDorothea & Georgö, that also features a very welcome female-male duet that brings ▓ªª
ªª▓ the emotive qualities of the rest of the record to a climactic point just before the known ▓ªª
ªª▓ portion of the album comes to a close over top of the dramatic occidental pair of cello and ▓ªª
ªª▓ martial snare drum. The actual end to the album is a hidden track that comes out around the ▓ªª
ªª▓ 8 minute mark of the final track and is a simple, relatively joyous flute-led folk jam that ▓ªª
ªª▓ implies a return home and life beyond that which is apparent to the listener. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ In all, minus the one mentioned track, the performances individually are fantastic, from the ▓ªª
ªª▓ vocals on down. The percussion is crisp and neither Stephan nor Mario appear to rely on a ▓ªª
ªª▓ simplistic non-roll approach, though it would be nice to hear more miscellaneous ▓ªª
ªª▓ involvement. The bass flows effortlessly through licks and the guitars are played cleanly ▓ªª
ªª▓ and have no problem ascending to at least a modest level of difficulty. Since the poetry of ▓ªª
ªª▓ Georg Thom is the focal point of the whole album, it feels disappointing that more effort ▓ªª
ªª▓ wasnÆt put into making the poems available to the listeners of the album to discover the ▓ªª
ªª▓ meanings behind the songs at their own discretion and understanding. Regardless, for the ▓ªª
ªª▓ most part, itÆs a beautiful effort that will warm the heart of any fan of Dies Natalis, ▓ªª
ªª▓ showing that there is certainly a fruitful future beyond the project for Strahl and the rest ▓ªª
ªª▓ of the musicians that helped make this release possible. ▓ªª
