| Phil Parnell is first and foremost an incredibly talented jazz |
| pianist. Phil hails from New Orleans; he became obsessed by jazz |
| as a teenager and went on to study at the Berklee College of |
| Music in Boston. On his return to New Orleans he worked at many |
| venues around the City and on the Mississippi. His skills taking |
| him further a field; he has played gigs around the world and |
| worked with many very notable artists, including George Porter, |
| Gatemouth Brown and Ellis Marsalis the father of Wynton, Branford |
| and Jason. |

| So how did a seemingly traditional Jazz musician from New Orleans |
| come to make an album of dark, brooding electronica for a UK |
| label? |
| |
| The location part is simple; Phil now lives in London with his |
| wife Mandy and son. The rest is more convolutedà. |
| |
| Whilst mastering a record at the The Exchange Matthew Herbert |
| asked about a teacher for Jazz piano, the engineer mentioned that |
| Phil might be able to help and Herbert got in touch. Phil |
| explained that he wasnÆt exactly a teacher but would be happy to |
| help Herbert with his touch and fingering in return for some tips |
| on how to use the modern electronic studio. Phil had made some |
| inroads into using synths and samplers in the early eighties but |
| found the archaic technology frustrating. |

| Revisiting this over the last couple of years with the able hand |
| of Matthew Herbert proved a more fruitful experience. Herbert |
| loaned Phil a sampler and the two have been meeting regularly to |
| exchange ideas and working methods. |
| The resulting LP for Mantis is an oddly sweet proposition. Tracks |
| like Laissez Faire are evocative of a hot night on the porch with |
| a glass of something cool and intoxicating. Runaway sounds like a |
| blissfully heat soaked southern night watching the sun go down. |
| Else where on the album tracks like Gris Gris and In Search Of |
| have an ethereal and cinematic quality. Then of course there are |
| the satisfyingly distinctive tracks such as Round and Git Up, |
| which are of the house music family but a far more eccentric |
| relation. |

| On HerbertÆs part, some of the work with Phil went on to become |
| part of his Bodily Functions LP and along with Dani Siciliano |
| Phil is an integral part of the Herbert live show. |
| |
| Though many jazz purists would scoff at this use of modern |
| technology Phil is more open minded. Variety is what keeps his |
| passion for music alive, he is as happy doing a tour of German |
| Protestant churches with vocalist Lilian Boutte (whose vocals |
| appear on Do Your Living In The Night and Laissez Faire) as he is |
| playing the World festival circuit with Matthew Herbert. |
