The third single from the highly anticipated Voices of Urban Renewal
album (GDRC 505) comes from two of Philadelphia's finest talents,
producer King Britt and poet extraordinaire, Ursula Rucker. On
"Circie" Miss Rucker slips into the sea soft skin of a mermaid and
delivers a sultry, seductive siren's song set to the sounds of modern
dancefloor maestros King Britt, Jazzanova and newcomer Rob Yancey.
The single kicks off with the outstanding "Jazzanova remix" a sublime
and haunting sci-fi jazz oddessy. Germany's undisputed champions of
the broken beat deliver the goods once again on this smoker's
paradise, dropping the tempo down a notch and adding space aged
aptmospherics, a devastating bassline and warped jazz textures to the
equation. The A2 "Vocal Mix" introduces Philly's newest young talent,
Rob Yancey to the scene. Here, he delivers a minimal liquid house
groove which taps into the "Scuba" sound pioneered by his mentor King
Britt . On the flipside, Mr. Yancey heats things up considerably with
the "Dub Mix" a dark, ominous trancey tech-house track that just
builds and builds, utilizing a catchy chorus from Miss Rucker's
powerful piece. This mix, which brings to mind the finer works of
Chicago track masters Little Louis, Gene Farris, and Green Velvet is
destined to rock the deepest and darkest of dancefloors. The record
winds down with the original album version, a pulsating sub aquatic
trip hop groove made moist by Mr. King Britt himself . All in all a
diverse, spiritual and soul satisfying package of mixes which
definately do justice to Ursula Rucker's poignant and timeless words.
