The 'Chambers of Apogee EP' isn't particularly consistent with
past releases on Space Cadets. It isn't particularly astral or
celestial in its outlook or stylistic aspirations, it has a kind
of bleak almost post apocalyptic aesthetic that shines through
comfortably across the rather varied four tracks. In some ways in
reminds of Vangelis, not only in terms of its musical feel and
lack of genre based constraint but also the guarded nature of its
creator (praise indeed!)
The title track is a kind of proto-jungle for the new era. Running
at 160 bpm but still sounding completely fresh and new, the breaks
are filtered in and out of the mix with its warm synth lines
holding everything together. The intermittent stabs of deep, deep
bass and spooky whistles to boot are certainly not to be
underestimated either despite their seemingly innocuousness at
first listen. 'Satyr' serves up some thumping kicks, laden with
reverb and some of that post apocalyptic soundscaping mentioned
earlier. More spooky high ends and some very Vangelis sounding
synth work in the midrift. 'Transitional Force' is the most, shall
we say, conventional sounding tune on the EP. By that I mean it's
the one you could probably mix with the widest variety of other
drum and bass music however it doesn't take many listens of this
EP to realise, that sort of mindset is just not on the agenda
here. There's more of a nod towards the traits of the tougher edge
of the autonomic movement present though. That kind care free
rawness that isn't trying to prove or polish anything to or for
anyone, the freedom that created such great music in that flicker
of brilliance in dnb's recent history. The last track, 'What We
Left Behind Will Be Lost Forever' is the least like drum and bass,
the most quirky but at the same time one of the most likeable
aspects of the whole EP. It's a kind of footnote that says 'right,
you've heard what I can do at 170, now have a bit of this!' Far
from sounding in any way like an after-thought, as so many non dnb
tracks from dnb producers do (ooh! I'd better show my diversity),
Lyterian, coming from outside of the genre is clearly more than
comfortable working his influences into different tempos and
styles. This tune is a stand up example of that.
If you read this feature regularly enough you'll be aware that
this is the second week in a row that it has been awarded to
somebody from outside of the genre who has turned their hand to it
very successfully. Is it co-incidence? I don't know. Could it be
that now the mainstream has got a firm grasp on one corner of the
scene, the opposite end feels more free and open to different
interpretations/expressions of a much looser formula. I don't have
the answers (although it's nice to be able to ask the questions).
We'll probably realise in a few years time. As with anything
historical, it's difficult to see the bigger picture when you're
immersed in it. All I know is that whatever change is going on,
'The Chambers of Apogee' EP is a part of it and to me has flicked
a small switch of realisation and for that reason it is my 12" of
the Week.
