│║ In 1985 and 1986 Ronnie James Dio and his band ║ │
│║ Dio loaded up five semi trucks and three buses, ║ │
│║ travelled to cities around the world, and put on ║ │
│║ a lavish show the likes of which few musicians ║ │
│║ had the clout to pull off. Featuring a gigantic ║ │
│║ castle stage set, complete with ramparts, ║ │
│║ drawbridge, and 15-foot high drum riser, eight- ║ │
│║ foot tall knights with laser swords, a hovering ║ │
│║ crystal ball that projected images, and a two- ║ │
│║ story tall, fire-breathing dragon nicknamed ║ │
│║ Dean, DioÆs tour in support of 1985Æs Sacred ║ │
│║ Heart album pulled out all the stops in order to ║ │
│║ give fans total bang for their buck. ║ │

│║ ôCome with me now and discover the magic that ║ │
│║ lies beyond the sea of dreams,ö a projection of ║ │
│║ Ronnie says during the June 17, 1986 performance ║ │
│║ at the Spectrum in Philadelphia that was filmed ║ │
│║ for VHS release. ôIf you have the courage to ║ │
│║ cross the rainbow bridge, you may find the ║ │
│║ Sacred Heart.ö North American culture today, ║ │
│║ including metal, is so imbued with irony that no ║ │
│║ popular band would attempt such a stunt with a ║ │
│║ straight face. Heavy metal was about escapism ║ │
│║ back then, not angst and catharsis, and those of ║ │
│║ us who listened to all the greats back in the ║ │
│║ 1980s û Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest û ║ │
│║ embraced the sentiment completely. ║ │

│║ We didnÆt for a second consider the lunacy of it ║ │
│║ all. It wasnÆt cheesy; it was awesome, and it ║ │
│║ was thrilling to see our favorite bands put ║ │
│║ together stage shows that focused on theatrics ║ │
│║ as much as the music. Today, most arena concerts ║ │
│║ by popular metal bands are fairly rote, bands ║ │
│║ using flashy lighting and hitting their marks, ║ │
│║ but during metalÆs halcyon days, concerts were ║ │
│║ performances. ThereÆs a huge difference between ║ │
│║ the two, and if you ask anyone who saw MaidenÆs ║ │
│║ Blade Runner set, PriestÆs colossal Turbo-era ║ │
│║ robot, or Dio slaying the dragon with his ║ │
│║ plastic light-up sword, theyÆll tell you thatÆs ║ │
│║ one of the big things missing from metal today. ║ │
│║ Which makes the wonderfully restored and ║ │
│║ remastered DVD release Finding the Sacred Heart: ║ │
│║ Live in Philly 1986 so special: it reminds us of ║ │
│║ how shamelessly fun and imaginative heavy metal ║ │
│║ could be. ║ │

│║ Originally released as the edited-down, 66- ║ │
│║ minute VHS Sacred Heart: The Video, the original ║ │
│║ concert film has not only been presented in its ║ │
│║ entirety for the very first time, but itÆs been ║ │
│║ released in high definition, something rarely if ║ │
│║ ever done with re-releases of 4:3 concert videos ║ │
│║ from the 1980s. As a result, the entire package ║ │
│║ offers a wonderful glimpse at DioÆs commercial ║ │
│║ peak. Although ace guitarist and collaborator ║ │
│║ Vivian Campbell abruptly quit the band early in ║ │
│║ the tour, he was quickly, and ably, replaced by ║ │
│║ Giuffria guitarist Craig Goldy, and he fit in ║ │
│║ perfectly, as is evident during this particular ║ │
│║ show. Along with bassist Jimmy Bain, drummer ║ │
│║ Vinny Appice, and keyboardist Claude Schnell, ║ │
│║ they formed a formidable backing band to the ║ │
│║ great Ronnie, and the little man with the ║ │
│║ towering voice puts in a commanding performance. ║ │
│║ ║ │

│║ Material from the bandÆs first three albums (and ║ │
│║ the Intermission EP) form the centerpiece of the ║ │
│║ 100-minute set, ranging from poppier moments ║ │
│║ like ôRainbow in the Darkö, ôHungry For Heavenö, ║ │
│║ and ôTime to Burnö to such heavier fare as ôThe ║ │
│║ Last in Lineö, ôStand Up and Shoutö, and ôWe ║ │
│║ Rockö. Of course the centerpiece is the 12- ║ │
│║ minute performance of ôSacred Heartö, where the ║ │
│║ castle and dragon set becomes the focal point, ║ │
│║ the song anchored by GoldyÆs fantastic, yet ║ │
│║ simple lead riff. If thereÆs a fault to be ║ │
│║ found, itÆs DioÆs reliance on medleys, but bless ║ │
│║ him, you knew he was just trying to give his ║ │
│║ fans as much of his music as he could. So ║ │
│║ instead of complete songs weÆre given snippets ║ │
│║ of ôHoly Diverö, ôThe Man on the Silver ║ │
│║ Mountainö, ôChildren of the Seaö, and ôLong Live ║ │
│║ Rock ænÆ Rollö, which is a shame, but the ║ │
│║ medleys are performed impeccably, and in DioÆs ║ │
│║ case, passionately. ║ │

│║ The bonus features are small but worthwhile, ║ │
│║ highlighted by a 1985 interview with Ronnie, and ║ │
│║ then one from the 2000s with he and Goldy, the ║ │
│║ pair reminiscing about that Æ85-Æ86 tour. As it ║ │
│║ stands, itÆs one of the most thoroughly ║ │
│║ satisfying live documents featuring Ronnie James ║ │
│║ Dio thatÆs ever been put out. ItÆs a snapshot of ║ │
│║ a time where the greatest singer heavy metal has ║ │
│║ ever known and will ever know was afforded a ║ │
│║ chance to put on a show that encapsulated his ║ │
│║ own vision of what his music meant to he and his ║ │
│║ fans, and as this glorious DVD shows, they ║ │
│║ nailed it. Now if only Amon Amarth would put on ║ │
│║ a show that involves Johann Hegg battling a ║ │
│║ gigantic animatronic Odin. ║ │
