Mariella Frostrup talks to Andrew Morton about the revelations, controversy and the legacy of Diana: Her True Story
In 1992, one man and one book changed the way the Royals behaved and how their people would regard them forever. Those inside the palace still refer to that moment and how it changed their family. But they rarely speak of it in specific terms. Today, they dare only to refer to it by its initialsà PM, or Post Morton.
Andrew Morton's book, Diana: Her True Story shocked the world when it was serialised by a cautious Sunday Times editorial team in 1992. As well as exposing the young princess' troubles and torments, it also wrote of a woman that then only a few people had heard of, Camilla Parker Bowles.
Twenty years after the publication of his book, Mariella Frostrup speaks to Morton about its controversy in an exclusive Book Show special.
Morton reveals how shocked he was at first hearing Diana discuss her life inside the Royal household when he was presented with tapes of her interview by her friend, James Colthurst. Morton also discusses his battle to corroborate his story before publication, using contacts given to him by Diana, as well as love letters between Camilla and Charles that the princess had taken from the palace.
The story defined Morton's career but also turned his life upside down. As he began to break his story, his office was ransacked. Fellow journalists filed discrediting copy, bookshops refuse to stock his work and he received death threats from Irish terrorist groups. Parliament also debated the authenticity of the book.
With his reputation in tatters, Morton was forced to seek a statement from Diana saying that she supported his book. Diana duly delivered but Morton didn't reveal that it was the princess herself who was his source until her untimely death in 1997.
Morton talks to Mariella about the reaction to his book, the assassination of his character and the threats he received. Others who either played a part in the creation of the book or those who sought to block its publication also speak about the defining story, which is today regarded as one of the most important books of the 20th century.
