`: Sun Worship is a German black metal :'
`: band with three releases and not a :'
`: whole lot of background information :'
`: to their name. After discovering :'
`: their impressive self-titled demo :'
`: about a week or so ago, I sought the :'
`: rest of their material. Their demo :'
`: was a rather straightforward, yet :'
`: admirably executed strain of :'
`: atmospheric black metal, reminiscent :'
`: to some of the Cascadian :'
`: powerhousesùalbeit a little :'
`: abbreviated in correlation, with :'
`: song times running under 8 minutes. :'
`: Being a sucker for the :'
`: atmospheric/Cascadian sound, I was :'
`: embarrassingly giddy when Sun :'
`: Worship's BandCamp unveiled yet :'
`: another free digital download of :'
`: their latest effort, Surpass :'
`: Eclipse. :'
`: :'
`: Surpass Eclipse immediately kicks :'
`: things into high gear with the :'
`: somewhat bombastic opening riffs of :'
`: Castle High. It's promptly evident :'
`: that more work went into the :'
`: production of this EP, in comparison :'
`: to their demo. The sound is richer :'
`: and fuller without being over- :'
`: produced or pristine. It works :'
`: extremely well with the music, as :'
`: Sun Worship has gravitated to a :'
`: faster, more aggressive tinge of :'
`: atmospheric black metal on their :'
`: opening track. Castle High is well- :'
`: constructed with unrelenting riffs :'
`: sure to please any black metaller, :'
`: yet it still maintains a certain :'
`: level of atmosphere by subtly and :'
`: flawlessly altering the pace of :'
`: riffs. With a song time of just over :'
`: five minutes, it's short enough to :'
`: maintain interest, but long enough :'
`: to showcase Sun Worship's well- :'
`: above-average compositional :'
`: abilities and understanding of their :'
`: genre. :'
`: :'
`: The second and final track, Eclipse, :'
`: runs a bit longer in playtime at :'
`: eight and a half minutes and is :'
`: noticeably akin to their earlier :'
`: style of atmospheric black metal. It :'
`: starts off with strikingly powerful :'
`: riffs and harmonies that are :'
`: sufficiently atmospheric, but still :'
`: remain predominately black metal in :'
`: influence. Eclipse eventually :'
`: transitions into a mesmerizing and :'
`: almost hypnotic shoegaze-y clean :'
`: section of slowly strummed chords. :'
`: While I'm not particularly a :'
`: shoegaze fanatic (even with the :'
`: sudden outpouring of ôblack-gazeö :'
`: bands), this section works extremely :'
`: well as a change of pace, for it :'
`: doesn't seemingly drag out for years :'
`: as other bands are often guilty of. :'
`: Fastidiously, the mesmerizing chords :'
`: amplify, transform, and evolve into :'
`: a final verseùa last hurrah of :'
`: sortsùover an excellently composed :'
`: mid-slow tempo tremolo riff before :'
`: finally subsiding into a drone of :'
`: distorted chords and feedback, :'
`: slowly bringing Surpass Eclipse to :'
`: end. :'
`: :'
`: Surpass Eclipse is an artfully- :'
`: crafted and masterfully-executed :'
`: effort by such an unfamiliar name. :'
`: While I usually try to avoid such :'
`: high levels of praise until I've :'
`: listened to a release numerous :'
`: times, I can faithfully say that :'
`: even though I've only listened to :'
`: this two-track EP a meager three :'
`: times, it's solidified a place as :'
`: one of my favorite releases of its :'
`: genre. I don't know where Sun :'
`: Worship has been hiding all of this :'
`: time, but I do know one thing... If :'
`: they continue to improve like they :'
`: have and release music of this :'
`: caliber consistently, I can see them :'
`: rising to the top. Quickly. I highly :'
`: recommend this EP to anyone that has :'
`: 14 minutes of free time; I assure :'
`: you it's worth it. :'
