 ████            Blackbird is the third full-length release                ████
 ████            from Kiwi band Fat FreddyÆs Drop and will no              ████
 ████            doubt be embraced by their legions of fans.               ████
 ████            For many, these mavericks of swampy reggae and            ████
 ████            dub-infused ballads can do no wrong, and                  ████
 ████            whatever the boys released fans would buy. But            ████
 ████            the beautiful thing is they do deliver. And               ████
 ████            while the album serves up a familiar cocktail             ████
 ████            of reggae, dub and soul, Blackbird also sees              ████
 ████            FFD honing in on rhythm and new beat                      ████
 ████            structures, and embracing more electronic                 ████
 ████            wizardry.                                                 ████
 ████                                                                      ████
 ████            Formed in 1999, the Wellington seven-piece                ████
 ████            have never stuck to a script. This improvised             ████
 ████            and independent approach to performing has                ████
 ████            become a rather endearing trait, though harder            ████
 ████            to capture in the studio. While songs on                  ████
 ████            previous studio albums have been refined and              ████
 ████            fine- tuned by playing live, Blackbird û more             ████
 ████            than any other Freddy album û finally captures            ████
 ████            the magic of what they do best on stage. These            ████
 ████            new tracks are loose-limbed arrangements and              ████
 ████            layered soundscapes that have an undeniable               ████
 ████            freshness and vitality, with or without the               ████
 ████            dulcet tones of Joe Dukie.                                ████
 ████                                                                      ████
 ████            Title track æBlackbirdÆ is immediately                    ████
 ████            intriguing with some interesting key changes,             ████
 ████            reminiscent of a clandestine meeting. There               ████
 ████            are staccato keys, sly smoky brass and furtive            ████
 ████            lyrics, ôI canÆt eat, I canÆt sleep, æcause I             ████
 ████            know theyÆll be watching me.ö The longest                 ████
 ████            track on the record (9.27), things get                    ████
 ████            grittier in the second half along with lots of            ████
 ████            reverb-heavy layers and some nice electronic              ████
 ████            flourishes (making a full listen worthwhile).             ████
 ████                                                                      ████
 ████            æClean The HouseÆ draws from a distinctly                 ████
 ████            Freddies palette and showcases the oh-so-sweet            ████
 ████            vocal styling of Dukie. With wah-wah guitar,              ████
 ████            itÆs less skanky and more funky, dealing with             ████
 ████            the universal theme of heartbreak. Most tend              ████
 ████            to get a bit melancholy on this sort of                   ████
 ████            subject, but not the Drop, this oneÆs got                 ████
 ████            plenty of barbecue-friendly good time groove.             ████
 ████                                                                      ████
 ████            Released late last year, first single æSilver             ████
 ████            and GoldÆ must be listened to loud, with                  ████
 ████            really good speakers or headphones! The value             ████
 ████            of a relationship that you keep on chasing,               ████
 ████            ôàitÆs so hard to break freeà chasing that                ████
 ████            silver and goldö, is just like the endless                ████
 ████            quest many are on for the real silver and                 ████
 ████            gold. Starting with a simple beat and melody              ████
 ████            things quickly ramp up with crashing cymbals              ████
 ████            and punchy brass. The pace slows again to a               ████
 ████            rhythmically hypnotic beat, which contrasts               ████
 ████            nicely as the angsty, driving basslines really            ████
 ████            kick in towards the end.                                  ████
 ████                                                                      ████
 ████            æBonesÆ begins as a soulful and sunshiny                  ████
 ████            toe-tapper (that will surely become a Kiwi                ████
 ████            summer anthem) with splashes of jazzy, feel               ████
 ████            good funk. At 7.31, itÆs perhaps a little long            ████
 ████            and repetitive, though the jazzinspired keys              ████
 ████            and synth lines add some nice                             ████
 ████            late-night-lounge-bar panache nearer the end.             ████
 ████                                                                      ████
 ████            With this album FFD somehow manage to mix a               ████
 ████            bit of everything from within the vast lexicon            ████
 ████            of musical genres. As the soul drenched vocals            ████
 ████            and jazz harmonies collide with dub, delays               ████
 ████            and echoing reverb, the Drop delivers their               ████
 ████            epic jams and musical meanderings with                    ████
 ████            seemingly effortless class and style. For                 ████
 ████            something thatÆs been brewing for a while now,            ████
 ████            with basslines and song structures that have              ████
 ████            been reworked and revised over the years,                 ████
 ████            Blackbird truly encapsulates the free spirited            ████
 ████                                                                      ████
 ████            FreddyÆs vibe. ThereÆs no silver here, theyÆve            ████
