█▒░░▓█ Oliver Ho presents "The Soft Machine", the █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ third album on Meta, the label and vision █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ that Oliver has been working on since 1997. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Over the past six years Meta has embraced █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ different influences, from African/Oriental █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Tribal music to Jazz and Latin styles, along █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ the way changing the face of modern Techno. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ There aren't many producers of his generation █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ that can lay claim to such prestige, yet █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Oliver's influence cannot be understated. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Still, at a time when the scene is awash with █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Tribal-template copyists, Oliver's work █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ sounds fresh and original. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ This album is a continuation in the themes █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ explored in previous releases, but also █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ features Oliver pushing the 'Meta sound' in a █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ more electronic direction. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ In many ways this is a culmination of styles █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ and ideas that have spanned the different █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ labels Oliver has recorded for. Labels such █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ as, Drumcode, Blueprint, Synewave, Tronic, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ SLS and many more. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ In his own words:- █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ "This album represents a fusion of ideas that █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ I have explored over the last 7 years with my █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ label Meta, taking the combination of █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ influences from jazz And tribal music and █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ melding that with a much darker electronic █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ sound. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ The title reflects the sound and concept, the █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ idea of organic technology, the connection █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ between the mutations and biology of nature █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ with the synthetic machine, 'the soft █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ machine' " █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ TRACK BY TRACK █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 1. THE SOFT MACHINE █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ After an imposing opening, the album's title █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ track kicks straight into some jacking █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ percussion, but as ever with Oliver's music, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ the smooth-flow isn't compromised by █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ heavy-handedness. There's real funk here, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ delivered through clever use of vocal █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ sampling, and the chords highlight a more █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ electronic sound than some of his earlier █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ work. The occasional drop-outs also indicate █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ a heavy Chicago house influence. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 2. CHANGING █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ The actual production of this release is very █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ slick indeed, and ably executes the organic █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ vs. synthetic concept - demonstrated well on █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ the opening to 'Changing'. Again, once the █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ track drops into it's pacey flow, it's funky █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ as hell. The Miles Davis-esque horn samples █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ hark back to certain parts of his last album, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 'Universal', but the synthy hypnotism and 909 █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ drums are shamelessly untainted. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 3. BURNT SIENNA █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ This is a Techno album without question but, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ on 'Burnt Sienna', a house sensibility █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ permeates once more - set against a more █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ linear and upbeat groove. Trademark African █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ chanting is peppered over delicately chiming █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ gamelan tones, and completed with an █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ uplifting organ riff. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 4. EPSILON ORIONIS █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Track four is even more uplifting, in the █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ best possible sense. There's plenty of █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ percussion, but no kick - not that you might █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ even notice, as the momentum is no less █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ present in their absence. The groove is built █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ over some almost UR-sounding keys - by far █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ the most unashamedly Detroit-influenced track █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Ho has produced, but still underpinned by his █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ own original stylistic traits. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 5. THE VISION PT. 1 █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 6. THE VISION PT. 2 █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ The mood is far more brooding across 'The █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Vision', taking it's time to seep into your █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ consciousness across two tracks. Oliver █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ crafts the atmosphere over Part 1, with some █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ darker strings and filter-popped percussion. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Perhaps it would be dismissive to describe █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ this as Millsian, but it does evoke memories █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ of 'Growth'. It's imposing, but less dense █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ than some of Oliver's other material - the █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ sounds are allowed space to breath. It makes █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ it all the more effective when the bulk of █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ the beats do drop, panning their way across █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ your speakers in a dance with the jazzy █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ piano.s █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 7. SUMMIT █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ The most intense track on the album, at least █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ rhythmically. A haunting female chant rises █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ over an unrelenting ravey riff which takes █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ centre stage when the beats drop, spiralling █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ into the stratosphere before plunging back █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ into the grinding locomotion of the track. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ Certainly one for the tougher floors, but █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ still with plenty of aural appeal. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ 8. BETWEEN █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ As credited before, Oliver understands when █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ to employ a density to his work or whether, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ as with some of the earlier tracks on the █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ album, to give a lighter and more delicate █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ quality. 'Between' manages to do both, heavy █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ on the bass, but painting a more fragile █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ picture with the high end frequencies, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ allowing for them both to occupy the same █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ space without sounding cluttered. █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ I merged the vision pt.1 and pt.2 together, █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ since it's a mix of both tracks. The █▓░░▒█
█▒░░▓█ transfer between the two tracks is at 04:30. █▓░░▒█
