From the bustling Sao Paulo metropolis, Daniel Oliveira's rise since 2010
has been meteoric. Better known by the hypocorism, DNYO, the Brazilian
has graced the catalogues of microCastle, Replug and Flow Vinyl while
also running his own Konstrukt imprint alongside Canadian, Tim Penner.
First coming to the attention of Jay Epoch through his "Treatment"
podcast for Proton Radio in 2011, 2012's conceptual "Echo" EP saw DNYO
mark his debut for Proton Music with two sublimely intricate slices of
progressive and deep house. Now, the deeply melodic jewel, "Roots"
receives two remix treatments from the Balkans with partner track
"Fruits" set to follow in the coming months. Ioannis Ntsouskos, from his
home in the west of Greece, has enjoyed a celebrated music career since
making waves in the progressive scene with 2004's eponymously titled EP
for John Digweed's Bedrock imprint. Since then a cascade of intricate
rhythms and melodies have found their way to the likes of Plusquam,
Movement and two full-length albums for Klik. A long association with
Vapour has also provided a gamut of releases and remixes over an eight-
year period. Dousk's long-awaited debut on Proton Music came with his
recent remix of Tvardovsky's "Infinite" but now, returning to take on
DNYO, Dousk perfectly demonstrates a suite of productions skills
illustrating an intimate knowledge of what works in a club scenario.
Providing clever echoes from the "Roots" original, Dousk has produced a
seething, dark, rhythmic gem. A grooved bass line dominates proceedings,
developing a symbiotic relationship with a driving kick drum and head-
shaking rhythm section, linked by an invisible umbilical cord. Darkly
twisted and pitched vocal cuts keep the intensity high as occasional
effects and melodic motifs pepper the rhythmic phrasing. Dousk's remix
illustrates a man at the summit of his production prowess. Turkish native
Sezer Uysal has an instinctive approach to the EDM creative process.
Reaching the Top 100 of Beatport's progressive, deep and tech house
charts has drawn attention to an individual who has since gone on to
become an official remixer for the Ministry of Sound brand. Diverse
support from Laidback Luke, Pete Tong and Hernan Cattaneo has stemmed
from over 350 Beatport track credits for a whole host of labels including
Balkan Connection, Particles and his own Dark Pleasure records. As part
of the Proton VS series, recent remixes from Colourblock and Sonic Union
and Pete McCarthey have also seen Sezer's "Section 5" take on a new lease
of life. Remixing DNYO, Sezer Uysal's interpretation of "Roots" is aptly
identified by its "3am" suffix. A strong beat twinned with a lazy rhythm
and warm pads are allowed to take root before a low-slung bass rhythm
locks itself into the accompanying groove, rising in intensity with
effortless ease. A reverb-drenched female vocal treatment provides a
final, perfect counterpoint to the fluid rhythms as it meanders across
proceedings in all its organic glory. The Balkan connection between Dousk
and Sezer Uysal has provided strong "Roots" from which DNYO is sure to
