In a scene cluttered by labels, stables, sub-imprints and below-par
giveaway downloads, anyone thinking about starting up a new brand needs to
consider their strategy before they investà. Or theyÆll be lost amongst the
crowd before they even begin.
AustraliaÆs Contemporary Scarecrow have clearly done this well. Firstly;
cracking name. Secondly; setting up shop with a release from legendary Boo
Williams and following it up with techno luminary Mr G is a sure-fire way
to get attention.
ôPotentö initiates proceedings with a thundering drum and synth stab
arrangement. No nonsense: just pedigree techno delivered in a way that will
make both Mills and Beyer wet themselves. With fresh rhythmic elements
thrown in on every 16, it builds with timeless grace and pays-off with a
well-known Raw Silk sample. Potent? Yes. Explosive, ruthless and funky tooà
Those who prefer tech with a æhouseÆ suffix should head for ôDance Floorö.
The same insistent cymbal splashes that drove us to insanity on ôPotentö
are present but layered much deeper into the mix as the spine-shuddering
vocal and creeping chord structures take to the fore.
ôTune Inö takes us back up to a more uncompromising status. Stripped back,
icy and laced with Detroitian sensibilities, each of the minimal elements
build to create a groove thatÆs far heavier than the sum of their parts.
The real fun begins on the breakdown as G throws in a heavy percussive
element to add a sense of tribal drama.
For a switch-flipping finale ôSeapussö is a much slower, sludgier jam.
Reminiscent of the output of his mate Radioslave, ôSeapussö is a sonic
swamp kept under heavily filtered house arrest. Unfortunately for some it
may seem a tad too swampy, with the only real clarity coming from the
refreshing æoohÆ samples that appear midway and shimmering chords that
creep in right at the end.
