ndrew "The Boats" Hargreaves slips into his Beppu guise for another exquisite
delivery on the Lacies imprint. I think it may be fair to tag this particular
strain of Andrew's work "Post-Techno", as he toys with the format in the
considered style of Robert Lippok or Thomas Fehlmann or Dave Moufang, making
clear a debt of influence from the German school of operators knowledgable of
techno, and the Krautrock vision that came before it, while seeking to
manipulate feelings of the two into something more personal, bordering on the
private. We've got no track names here, making their barely weighted form even
more ephemeral, but we can say that the four tracks move from submerged
dub-house pulses through to hazy, crackle-textured surfaces reminiscent of
Farben, and on through chess-like arrangements of synth bass and microscopic
melodies, to an end-point of succulent dub-house abstraction recalling the MvO
trio's 'Vertical Ascent' in miniature. Beautiful stuff, that's probably already
gone by the time you've finished reading. Sorry!
