Beppu is a city located on the island of Kyushu in Japan. It's also the
pseudonym of Andrew Hargreaves, half of the Boats and a thoroughly nice chap to
boot. Together with his beau they run the bijou Lacies imprint, a home for the
beautiful music of their friends and peers. At a guess, most people who have
heard the Boats may not realise that Andrew actually harbours a serious record
collection with a particular seam of German techno and electronica running deep
thorugh his shelves. Of course it's not Hart House, but Basic Channel or Move D
which Andrew takes inspiration from here, crafting four delicate tracks of
post-techno, drfting from saturated dub hiss to gently coaxed 4/4's reminding of
Fluxion or B.C intended for the dancefloor of the mind. The final track could
even be a miniaturised approximation of the recent Moritz Trio LP, but imbued
with the thoughtful Boats process and character. These are as limited as they
come and we don't expect them to last 5 minutes so get your fix while you can.
