You might think we have enough Blue/Rock supergroups what with BCC and
Chickenfoot and now we get The Rides. Quite simply, these are the guys who wrote
most of the books û how could they not be brilliant?
You get: Steve Stills û yes from CSN&Y fame or Manassas fame û and you get Kenny
Wayne Shepherd whose roadhouse Blues is a modern classic style and to top it off
you get Barry Goldberg, one of the founders of Electric Flag with Mike
Bloomfield, Nick Gravenites and Buddy Miles û like I say, these guys wrote the
books and when you add in Jerry Harrison on producer duties they add up to a
mighty noise.
Right from the opener, a chugging and dark Mississippi Road House û a story of
an itinerant bluesman, co-written by the three - the guitars are working and the
growling vocals set the music up perfectly.
The numbers include a few more co-written songs and some remarkable covers as
well as a Stills number from wayback and showcases all their talents as well as
showing what can happen when you put three guys together, light the blue
touchpaper and record the result. This was recorded pretty well live in a week
and the closeness of the three shows in the music.
The project began with Stills and Goldberg writing together at their mutual
manager Elliot RobertsÆ recommendation. "It was like finding a long lost soul
brother" says Goldberg (who hadnÆt met Stills before, their shared 1968 credit
notwithstanding). "We connected on so many things, started jamming, and soon had
begun writing our first song."
"The Rides are a perfect mix of generations, where three musicians who love and
play the blues collide and create music that goes beyond all our other
individual life experiences and career achievement," says 35-year-old, Shepherd,
whoÆs had six #1 Blues albums. "Stephen and I have rock backgrounds as well, but
the blues is the fabric that holds this all together."
"In the spirit of that simple, raw authentic 40s and 50s blues music the three
of us love, we got in there and boom! A few takes and we were done," says
Stills. "The songs have muscle; they donÆt sound dated or contrived. TheyÆre
very natural and organic. I canÆt wait to tour with these guys and start
recording again."
The covers include an incendiary version of Neil YoungÆs RockinÆ In The Free
World and a quite awesome version of Iggy and The Stooges Search & Destroy as
well as Elmore James Talk To Me Baby and Muddy Waters Honey Bee but the
co-written songs are all keepers as well.
