"I have but one word to describe this... Stellar! Magnificent!
Brilliant! Oh, that's three words, Oops! When it's this good, who's
counting? I absolutely love it!" - Frankie Knuckles
New York house music (undoubtedly a more rapacious and aggressive
animal than its Chicago godfather) has longtime producers, Mateo &
Matos to thank for keeping it alive. Raised on the city's late 70s
disco shows, Eddie 'E-Z' Matos and John 'Roc' Mateo hooked up in the
mid 80s via John's own pirate radio mixes that he broadcasted from
his own home. After being mentored by a pre-Masters-At-Work, Louie
Vega and spending much of the late 80s actively playing NYC's house
circuit, Mateo & Matos embarked on a recording career that saw them
drop deep singles for classic labels such as Nervous, Spiritual Life,
and Henry Street as well as several original and mix albums for
Scotland's Glasgow Underground. Essential Elements, their US album
debut, enforces they're role once again in keeping deep house a
credible art form. Here they infuse African, Latin, and the good ol'
four-to-the-floor beats in a complex combination of true New York
flavour. The album tracks have been mixed together to give it a beefy
blend that would be perfect for the floor of many poorly lit dance
dwellings.
