│║ I love Steve Vai and I love Yngwie Malmsteen. I ║ │
│║ must stress though, that I feel Yngwie's playing ║ │
│║ fit Alcatrazz better than Vai, though there's ║ │
│║ more "playful" elements to Vai's fretboard ║ │
│║ gymnastics. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Whereas NO PAROLE FROM ROCK AND ROLL was and ║ │
│║ still is a very regal-sounding album, DISTURBING ║ │
│║ THE PEACE sounds like any other LA hair-metal ║ │
│║ band with better guitar playing. Don't get me ║ │
│║ wrong, I do like DISTURBING quite a bit, but it ║ │
│║ almost sounds cynically done, as if to say, ║ │
│║ "Alright, here's our stab at being Ratt or ║ │
│║ Dokken." ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Vai's guitar work is inventive and definitely ║ │
│║ carries a lot of the album. There's definitely ║ │
│║ the Zappa-esque moments that creep in here and ║ │
│║ there, especially on "God Blessed Video" and ║ │
│║ even "Wire and Wood" (my favourite song on the ║ │
│║ album). The rest of the band sounds like they're ║ │
│║ having fun too. Then there's the vocals... ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ What kills me about this album is Graham ║ │
│║ Bonnett's voice. It's so over-wrought and at ║ │
│║ times ruins the vibe of the music. Some of the ║ │
│║ lyrics are witty and clever, other times they're ║ │
│║ downright corny. Even if Neil Peart wrote all ║ │
│║ the words, Graham's voice would just find a way ║ │
│║ to make them unlistenable. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So I knocked 10 points for the vocals and 10 ║ │
│║ more points for the paper-thin production. ║ │
