Theres a right time and place for everything. And it
would seem for Swedish DJ and producer StoneBridge that
his time is now. The success of his huge summer anthem
"Put Em High", which garnered him a number #1 in the
dance charts and no end of rave reviews has only
heightened expectations of what else Stoney might have
stored in his tank. Yet when youre an internationally
acclaimed DJ jetting between Londons Pacha and El Divino
in Ibiza, playing regular sets in New York and Russia,
while running a house label from NY, remixing #1 hits for
the likes of Enrique Iglesias; finding the time to make
your first solo album as a producer can be hard. Luckily
fate intervened and brought StoneBridge and ultra-hip UK
dance label Hed Kandi together to produce one of the
years hottest debut albums, that not only consolidates
the impeccable track record of both, but pushes the
boundaries of their unquestionably high standards even
further. "Cant Get Enough", StoneBridges debut artist
album, encapsulates the very essence of what Hed Kandi
represents to its many loyal fans; that of exclusive
tracks, flawlessly assembled, with an instantly
recognisable sound. Fuelled by an incredible array of
vocal talent that includes Therese, Ultra Nate, Isabel
Fructuoso (Afro Medusa), Julie Morrison, DaYeene, Jay
Soul and Kenny Thomas and cemented by solid hooks at
every turn, deep, penetrating bass and in-your-face
grooves, flourishes of Latin, hip-hop and soul plus a
rich, warm production style and you cant doubt the
qualities of this project.
Yet this is an album that needed to happen at the right
time, with the right people, with enough vision to ensure
that things met their full potential, and for StoneBridge
that meant working with the right label to bring out the
best in what he offers as a producer. Thus he found his
true spiritual home at Hed Kandi. He explained how
through joining their acclaimed DJ roster two years ago
he began to form strong bonds with label boss and A&R
Svengali Mark Doyle; "I was introduced to Mark by one of
my former managers in Cannes during Midem 2000. My
manager told me he was a bit of a fan and I sat down and
was given a huge pile of very stylish CDs. Once back in
Sweden, I realised a lot of my remixes from the 1994-95
era were included and even more forthcoming ones. In
Miami the following year, Mark asked me if I wanted to
play on their party there, which was impressive because
I'm not sure if he knew I was a proper DJ. The party was
a huge success and I was offered a residency at the
forthcoming Rouge party in London. After being in London
a lot, we were frequently talking about music and mixes
and after a year he offered me an album deal out of the
blue. During the making of the album, we have been
working very close, discussing directions and new ideas
in a way I have never experienced with any other label
before. I think Mark is basically any producer's dream
A&R when it comes to passion for the music rather than
the more cynical business end of things."
Ten years ago StoneBridge made a big impression when his
1993 remix of "Show Me Love" by Robin S took the world by
storm and spawned and international hit. So Doyle was
justifiably confident Stoney could take the next step up
and produce a world class album. He explained how he was
approached by the Hed Kandi boss; "One day Mark e-mailed
me and asked me if I ever had thought about making an
album. I replied yes, but that I haven't found the right
label with the right reasons. He replies; If you want a
really commercial pop album, were not the right label for
you, but if you want to do your own vision without
limitations, we are. Realising I was being offered an
album deal with Hed Kandi, I immediately started thinking
about what I could deliver and who I would collaborate
with on the album. I decided to knock out a collection of
instrumental tracks and then send them to people I have
established relations with already or people that I had
talked to about doing tracks."
When youve been circulating among (and remixing) the
cream of the global house scene for the best part of
twenty years you are going to have an impressive list of
contacts, and StoneBridge it seems has pulled out the
very best ones for "Cant Get Enough". Whether its Ultra
Nate, Chris Coco, Julie Morrison, Jay Soul or a certain
dread-locked rocker who flew in to add some guitar the
results represent the fresh qualities StoneBridge has
brought to his first major studio album. Talking in-depth
about this amazing list of collaborations he details the
spontaneity that kept the music flowing and resulted in
such a self-assured debut; "The first track I did for it
was 'Clorophilla' with Costantino 'Mixmaster' Padovano
and Isabel Fructuoso, who flew over to Stockholm. The
next two where 'Gotta Give It Up' with Kenny Thomas, who
I had met on a Hed Kandi party in London and 'Give A
Little' with Rita Campbell, who had done work with Mark
earlier. I still didn't have any structure or plan for
the album, it was more of a creative phase and just
making music they way I wanted."
After a visit from old friend and collaborator Chris Coco
had produced three more inspired musical moments, 'Can't
Get Enough', 'What A Day' and '60 Seconds', and vocalist
DaYeene had delivered stunning takes on 'Once In A
Lifetime' and 'What A Day', Doyle was very pleased with
his new signings progress. Yet another turning point was
about to occur on the albums first anthem "Put Em High";
Stoney explained how the track took shape quickly and how
the spontaneity of the creative process can never be
ignored; "The defining moment came when I recorded 'Put
'Em High' with Therese. It was one of those really quick
sessions where most of the lead vocal was recorded in one
take. My favourite part, the ad-libs at the end, were a
part of her warm up and not originally part of the song."
The results are pure-class, old school yet underscored by
an emphatic bass-pulse, all capped by Thereses at first
sultry then high-arching vocal - this is a match made in
house-heaven.
Leading an international lifestyle makes getting all the
people you need in one place at one time difficult, but
StoneBridge found a way round this; "Another great moment
was recording Ultra Nate in Montreal. 'Freak On' was
written by me, Ultra and Gerry DeVeaux all in different
places in the world. I sent the track to Ultra in
Baltimore and Gerry in Sydney and they wrote the lyrics
over the phone just a few days before the session in
Canada. The multi-lateral theme continued through other
contacts in Canada; Having good friends in Montreal
resulted in two tracks; 'Deeper Love' with David Gordon
and 'Let's Loze It' with Jay Soul, who is a bit of a Mac
Daddy there. I met him when I recorded 'Show You How' and
needed a short rap just to give it the right old school
flavour. At some point I had discussed music with Mark
and we both used to like G Funk a lot so 'Let's Loze It'
was my take on that. Julie Morrison, who I wrote 'Show
You How' and 'Desire' with ended up on the lead vocal on
'Show' because everybody loved the demo so much. On
'Desire' we decided to use Bonnie Bailey, who I had met
at various Hed Kandi parties. She really turned it out
and made it special. One of the last tracks recorded was
'Crazy' which is a collaboration between me and Axwell. I
was planning to keep it instrumental at first, but took a
chance and sent it to a UK writer called Bruce
Elliott-Smith, who was working with singer Stella. It is
not a classic StoneBridge sound, but I think it gives the
album an edge."
So why now? Why break the habit of a lifetime of playing
other peopleÆs records and make your own? Well, the
answers to this are pretty obvious to StoneBridge; "I had
been eying other DJ artist albums and had been secretly
thinking; 'That wasnt that good, was it?' and 'I would
have done it like this' without actually thinking about
doing one myself. When Mark put the proposal in front of
me, the time was right. I couldn't have done this album
ten years ago since I simply wasn't confident enough to
do my own thing. But rather than going ultra-flash with
his production Stoney wanted a beating heart and soul at
the centre of this project, to make a really solid
record; I wanted an album with full songs, not just
tracks, because in years time it will be the songs that
are remembered. The spirit could be described as
future-retro, but at the same time it is a varied
collection because of the many collaborators. I also used
a lot of retro gear when recording the album to make it
sound warm and less programmed."
Here it is, retail baby.
Enjoy!
