│║ The seventh full-length album from Finnish ║ │
│║ melodic death metal titans Kalmah, ôSeventh ║ │
│║ Swamphony,ö is yet another in a long line of ║ │
│║ strong efforts from this emerging act and should ║ │
│║ propel them out into the more respected area of ║ │
│║ the genre instead of being seen as hopping on ║ │
│║ the bandwagon of a popular genre. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Along with fellow countrymen Children of Bodom, ║ │
│║ the main ingredients to be found here is ║ │
│║ keyboard-laced death metal infused with luscious ║ │
│║ melodies from the keyboard/guitar interplay ║ │
│║ while the whole monster rattles along at a speed ║ │
│║ consistent with thrash metal. The thrash is only ║ │
│║ present in the speed, thatÆs all, and when ║ │
│║ merged with the luscious keyboards they make for ║ │
│║ a wholly listenable and enjoyable effort as the ║ │
│║ tracks wind through their course. As the ║ │
│║ keyboards are the main focus of the day, they ║ │
│║ take away the brutality of the death metal ║ │
│║ riffing and pretty much renders that influence ║ │
│║ almost null and void in the overall sound as the ║ │
│║ melodic nature of the songs take center stage in ║ │
│║ the swirling mass with the keyboards and ║ │
│║ creating an overall impressive mixture here. ║ │
│║ Really the only death metal left in the band at ║ │
│║ this point is the vocals which adapt a tone of ║ │
│║ clean and gruff-ness that recalls the Gothenburg ║ │
│║ movement in the mid-90s but is done over-the-top ║ │
│║ of the shimmering keyboards that are ramping up ║ │
│║ the melody more than ever. In select passages ║ │
│║ here without the strong keyboard focus the band ║ │
│║ adapts a feel more reminiscent of a traditional ║ │
│║ melodic death metal band in the style and tone ║ │
│║ of their riffing, and it goes to show what kind ║ │
│║ of an impact those keyboards have on the band. ║ │
│║ The sense of epic grandeur afforded by the ║ │
│║ melodic keyboard/guitar interplay is another ║ │
│║ defining factor of the band that has been ║ │
│║ retained since their early days, and is in full ║ │
│║ effect here as well which makes this a true ║ │
│║ continuation of the band in most aspects. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While the melody is in full force here, the fact ║ │
│║ that thereÆs a few other factors present to make ║ │
│║ this an enjoyable album which is the overall ║ │
│║ production on the album. Normally, that would be ║ │
│║ added last at the end of the review but it must ║ │
│║ be mentioned here due to the overwhelming sense ║ │
│║ of atmosphere within their sound thatÆs given an ║ │
│║ extra special boost by the impressive production ║ │
│║ sound. With the guitars being heavily ║ │
│║ distinguishable, it allows all the melodies to ║ │
│║ come through powerfully without sacrificing any ║ │
│║ of the speed or precision within the riffs that ║ │
│║ make it so memorable and catchy, and of course ║ │
│║ with the keyboards taking a prominent place ║ │
│║ within their music the strong production here ║ │
│║ keeps the two elements in check without ║ │
│║ overshadowing or drowning out the other. Rather ║ │
│║ than being a dark, depressive and guttural ║ │
│║ sound, the light-ness and overall freer style ║ │
│║ this creates is almost reminiscent of a power ║ │
│║ metal album only with gruffer vocals, all due to ║ │
│║ this oneÆs awesome production and really helps ║ │
│║ the band hone their sound almost as much as ║ │
│║ their writing style. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As expected, the songs here are all quite ║ │
│║ impressive and really make for an enjoyable ║ │
│║ experience. The title track opens things off ║ │
│║ with shimmering keyboards, full-throttle ║ │
│║ drumming, impressive riffing that injects a ║ │
│║ little bit of technicality into the whole ║ │
│║ affair, and is topped off with outstanding ║ │
│║ soloing that creates an atmospheric maelstrom to ║ │
│║ make for a fine opening track. æDeadfallÆ is ║ │
│║ almost as impressive with some stellar riffing ║ │
│║ up-front but really earns its weight with a ║ │
│║ spectacular mid-section loaded with thrashing ║ │
│║ speed, tons of keyboards and blasting drumming ║ │
│║ thatÆs absolutely crushing and wholly ║ │
│║ impressive. The up-tempo æPikemasterÆ has even ║ │
│║ more thrashing within as itÆs a total speed- ║ │
│║ laced barnburner with more dominant guitar ║ │
│║ riffing and full of impressive drumming that ║ │
│║ makes for three stellar highlights in a row. ║ │
│║ While æHolloÆ might be the one down track, as ║ │
│║ the mid-tempo pace and the epic clean vocals ║ │
│║ drain the speed and recalls traditional melodic ║ │
│║ death metal bands far more than previous tracks ║ │
│║ with the guitars playing a more dominant part in ║ │
│║ the music than the keyboards, it still retains a ║ │
│║ true Kalmah feel with the keyboards still in ║ │
│║ focus as it picks up speed toward the end. The ║ │
│║ full-speed thrasher æWindlake TaleÆ returns to ║ │
│║ more familiar grounds with lots of memorable ║ │
│║ guitar lines and a flurry of keyboard melodies ║ │
│║ in a spectacular mid-section break as the band ║ │
│║ goes into full-throttle mode with great effect. ║ │
│║ æWolves on the ThroneÆ eases off the throttle ║ │
│║ slightly and becomes less of a speed-demon ║ │
│║ offering that so many other tracks are but still ║ │
│║ with all their traditional elements working in a ║ │
│║ mid-tempo chug thatÆs somewhat surprising. The ║ │
│║ up-tempo blaster æBlack Marten's TraceÆ returns ║ │
│║ to the thrashing quality in a keyboard-laced ║ │
│║ charger with blasting drumming and an infectious ║ │
│║ melody running throughout that feels as ║ │
│║ energetic as anything the band has done. The ║ │
│║ epic closing track æThe TrapperÆ is another one ║ │
│║ of the dominant mid-tempo melodic-death songs as ║ │
│║ the riffing is more guitar-focused and features ║ │
│║ minor injections of keyboard melodies but still ║ │
│║ closes the album out on a strong note. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ About as consistent and full of quality as can ║ │
│║ be expected from the band, thereÆs not a lot ║ │
│║ really wrong here as the band manages to deliver ║ │
│║ a healthy slab of melodic, keyboard-infused ║ │
│║ death metal with a wide array of influences ║ │
│║ coming together in a tight, strong package. At ║ │
│║ times evoking more of a true melodic death act, ║ │
│║ others are their traditional flair and then a ║ │
│║ few change-ups thrown into the mix for a ║ │
│║ surprise here and there overall makes for a real ║ │
│║ quality offering from an act thatÆs delivered ║ │
│║ time and again which is part of what makes this ║ │
│║ so much fun in that it should be the album that ║ │
│║ sees them finally becoming one of the top acts ║ │
│║ in the field. This is highly recommended to all ║ │
│║ fans of their previous works as well as those ║ │
│║ looking for something beyond the normal melodic ║ │
│║ death metal offerings. ║ │
