│ For many, the relationship began in 1989 with the video │
│ for "Manifest," in which a young man with Malcolm X-styled │
│ glasses and a wide, toothy grin addressed a collection of │
│ raucous hooligans with the calm assurance of a natural │
│ leader. Even then - standing at the podium, dressed more │
│ like a preacher than an emcee - it was clear that Keithy E │
│ (later known as Guru: Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) │
│ was much more than the literally scores of similarly │
│ attired wannabee's using the cause of Black Nationalism as │
     │ a side-hustle. Then there was the song itself, a │
│ receptively breezy collection of sensible, yet arrogant │
│ rhymes on top of an instantly hypnotic saxophone loop │
│ courtesy of DJ Premier. Fans looking for something new had │
│ just caught a glimpse of hip-hop's future. The Gang Starr │
│ dynasty had begun, and more than a decade later, it's │
     │ still going on. │
     │ │
│ On one side you have Keith, a judge's son who grew up on │
│ the mean streets of Roxbury, Mass. Upon leaving home to │
│ follow his muse he puts his sociology degree to good use │
│ by mentoring neglected youth at a Brooklyn group home. As │
│ Guru he evokes the image of an inhabitant of a smoky jazz │
│ club, an individual, who personifies the flavor of │
│ multiple time periods, and can articulate the language of │
│ the gentleman, thug, scholar and warrior. │
     │ │
│ On the other there is Chris, a native of Prairie View, │
│ Texas blessed with both an analytical mind and an │
│ intuitive mastery of music theory. As DJ Premier he speaks │
│ with his hands and thinks by way of the drum. He does not │
│ make beats, he composes music - layers of rich sounds that │
│ connect with a harmony that is as seamless as it is │
│ peerless. Jazz, rock, funk, soul, it's all his to command. │
│ And like a musical alchemist everything he touches turns │
     │ to hip-hop. │
     │ │
│ All of the elements that would enable Gang Starr to │
│ dominate the '90s can be witnessed on their debut, No More │
│ Mr. Nice Guy - if not with that decade's precision, then │
│ certainly lurking about in spirit and intent. During the │
│ course of the album Premier's intricate arrangements glide │
│ from cautious to innovative, while Guru's rhymespeak │
│ suggests congested com plexity balanced with deliberate │
     │ simplicity. │
     │ │
│ "Manifest," the song that would become the group's │
│ signature sounds as fresh today as when it was first │
│ produced. "Jazz Music" remains rap's first homage to an │
│ art that stressed innovation and creative genius over │
│ personal gain. What took Ken Burns nineteen hours to say, │
│ Keith and Premo deftly sum up in less than five minutes │
│ and in doing so use the past to inform the present. The │
│ sonic collage of "DJ Premier in Deep Concentration" still │
│ holds up as one of the last great DJ instrumentals to │
     │ grace a mass-market rap LP. The New Jack-styled love song, │
│ "Conscience Be Free" showcases the group's ability to │
│ exist in the moment, while the mix show ambiance of the │
│ title track and the pimptastic force of "Knowledge" remain │
     │ atop the album's dirtiest grooves. │
     │ │
│ Even then it was clear they would be difficult to label. │
│ Are they jazz or rock? Do they stand for emotional poise │
│ or reckless abandon? hoochies and guns or spiri- │
│ tuality and introspection? The answer, of course, is: all │
│ of the above. Gang Starr exists on all planes of human │
│ behavior simultane ously, their honesty and consistency, │
│ placing them amongst hip-hop's most revered voices. To │
│ witness artistry performed at its height, all you need │
│ do is examine anything that these two men have ever come │
│ into contact with and you will surely have your answer, │
│ proving forever that hip-hop is not something you do, it's │
     │ something you are. │
     │ │
│ Think of this deluxe version of No More Mr. Nice Guy as │
│ welcome addition to your CD collection. And even if you │
│ own the original wax it is doubtful that you have ever │
│ heard it like this. This collection has been filled with │
│ rare extras such'as unreleased outtakes, rare b-sides, and │
│ for you archivists, the group's nearly forgotten 12-inch │
│ debut, "The Lesson." One listen to this youthful attempt │
│ and you will understand how humble their beginnings were │
│ and just how far along they have come. │
     │ │
     │ Over a decade later, b-boys have become b-men, and Gang │
│ Starr is still here, doing what they do best. While many │
│ rap "pioneers" are content to live in the past and rest on │
│ past accomplishments, Guru and Premier remain on the front │
│ lines of creativity, taking creative risks, developing new │
│ artistic muscles and taking hip-hop to places it has never │
│ gone before. A simple career is not enough for these two. │
│ They strive to build something bigger, and more enduring. │
│ What Gang Starr is constructing is a new musical │
│ discipline, a conservatory of the streets, an institution. │
│ And whether it's introducing new talent or collaborating │
│ with musical masters of days gone by, Gang Starr remain │
│ the epitome of quality, never outdone, always out doing │
│ and forever two steps ahead of the competition. │
     │ │

│ CMS was established in 1998 due to the fact that nobody was │
│ releasing slept on hiphop. In 2g, cms has developed into one of │
│ the deepest mp3 crews on Efnet. People have came and left, but │
│ the legacy lives on. And about competition, we don't compete with │
│ other groups, we compete with ourselves. │
