The Wynntown Marshals' "The Long Haul" is possibly the purest piece of Americana
you will hear this year. That is, if your idea of Americana is the west coast
sounds of The Eagles.
Much like Dawes take a leave out of the 1970's book of songwriting, The Marshals
touch a rich vein with their delicately understated yet brazen rock æn' roll.
Opening in earnest with "Driveaway" with its clarion call of "rucksacks, guitars
and cars", The Wynntown Marshals set their stall out with its driving guitars
and rich vocals. Yes, The Eagles even get a mention but that is a moot point as
all aspersions of nostalgia are thrown aside.
This is a call for greatness although, intriguingly, it seems like if that was
the case then it was by pure accident. By that, it means the this band do what
they do purely for the love of it.
Take "Canada", which swoops and swoons and then leads into "Low Country
Comedown", which singularly evokes the charms of Elton John's "Tumbleweed" era
with its almost sepia-tinged melody. It has a warmth and melancholy which casts
this band up there with the greats.
"The Submariner" evokes a past long gone too as it's slide guitar reaches out to
the lost '60s of countless Americana roots bands. Although there seems to be a
rebirth and renewed interest in this period, there as also been the mistaken
view that the music can be made by a newer breed.
Some succeed, many fail. The Wynntown Marshals succeed in buckets.
To top off what is already feeling like the best Americana album this year is
"North Atlantic Soul", which builds into an almost epic, but never quite falls
into the trap of triteness.
The stateliness is less refined than say, The National, but it is all the better
for it and Dawes may need to watch their step as the Marshals sneak up behind
them.
A wonderful album which grows and grows with every listen.
The best that Americana can produce. All this from a British band too!
