Eurovision winners' albums usually are more like commemorative
souvenirs than full-fledged CDs, or else they are "special
edition" releases of a previous CD with the Eurovision track
added as a bonus. This is the rare album by a ESC winner that
will please fans of the winning song, and yet stands on its
own as a coherent piece of music.
De Forest is very assured and confident in who she is as an
artist, after working in the Celtic folk-pop genre through her
teens. Now at the ripe old age of 20, she can release an album
that feels organic and real. If "Only Teardrops" had not been
her choice for Melodi Grand Prix and Eurovision, several of
the other tracks on this album might have succeeded almost as
well.
But "Only Teardrops" is the album's title and lead single, and
appears here as a short instrumental overture to introduce the
album, as the third track (in the version we know from
Emmelie's stage performance), and in a closing track that is a
bit slower and grander in an orchestral setting. It is a mark
of how strong a song "Teardrops" is that each time you hear it
in one of its several guises here, it comes as a welcome visit
from an old friend that you never tire of.
The album's other tracks are in a similar vein, and showcase
de Forest's song-writing as well as her unique vocal style. If
you liked "Teardrops" you will be happy to hear that it was
not a fluke, and "Hunter and Prey", "Change" "What Are You
Waiting For?" and "Force of Nature" with their sylvan Celtic
sounds will definitely appeal to you.
The second half of the album brings things down to a bit
slower and less propulsive midtempo ballad mood. Softer
instrumentation and smooth beats give the listener a better
chance to just enjoy the quality of Emmelie's vocals, which
shine on "Soldier of Love" and "Let It Fall". There truly is
not a bad track on "Only Teardrops", and it may be the best
album by a Eurovision winner in the last decade.
