│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It is not often I get the opportunity to review ║ │
│║ a debut album that legitimately impresses me or ║ │
│║ defies my expectations in a positive way. Yet ║ │
│║ with the release of Leaving All Behind, Nautiluz ║ │
│║ has produced an excellent debut that captures ║ │
│║ much of what I enjoy about power metal. When I ║ │
│║ first heard that the band was from Peru, my ║ │
│║ expectations fell a little bit. IÆve had too ║ │
│║ many experiences with bad South American power ║ │
│║ metal bands trying a bit too hard to recreate ║ │
│║ AngraÆs magic. I was prepared for bad Angra ║ │
│║ worshiping, vocals that are either impossible to ║ │
│║ understand or patently ridiculous, and a ║ │
│║ generally dull performance. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ What I got however, was a well mixed, well ║ │
│║ produced symphonic power metal album with ║ │
│║ talented instrumentalists, a vocalist that knows ║ │
│║ his stuff, and strong songwriting throughout. To ║ │
│║ say it was a pleasant surprise would be an ║ │
│║ understatement û in two dayÆs IÆve chocked up ║ │
│║ nearly 100 plays. And IÆm still listening to the ║ │
│║ album. I have also managed to get two Black Wind ║ │
│║ Metal comrades into the album as well. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The first thing I noticed were the guitars. ║ │
│║ Guitarists Diego and Alonso do a great job of ║ │
│║ making the guitars both riff-heavy enough to get ║ │
│║ those fists pumping, and shred-heavy enough to ║ │
│║ provide great fills and solos (both single and ║ │
│║ dual). Songs like ôThe Mirrorö really exemplify ║ │
│║ the character of the guitars on this album, ║ │
│║ beginning with a solidly grounded heavy metal ║ │
│║ riff and developing into a more ║ │
│║ characteristically power metal sound during the ║ │
│║ verses, before launching into a stream of great ║ │
│║ instrumental solos. Other songs, like ôThe Bardö ║ │
│║ and ôChasing The Lightö, begin with a blistering ║ │
│║ solo right out of the gate and never let up. Yet ║ │
│║ the playing is never messy, and never overpowers ║ │
│║ the vocals or other instruments. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The keyboards are also a highlight throughout ║ │
│║ the album. Keyboardist Renzo does a great job of ║ │
│║ moving quickly between being a lead instrument ║ │
│║ and playing a supporting role. At times, like ║ │
│║ near the beginning of ôUnder The Moonlight,ö he ║ │
│║ provides almost Rhapsody-like orchestral sounds, ║ │
│║ and other times takes an almost Stratovarius- ║ │
│║ like leading role (before I get the inevitable ║ │
│║ Dagg comment, IÆm not comparing to Senor ║ │
│║ Johansson, just explaining some similarities in ║ │
│║ sound.) If you listen closely, the keyboard ║ │
│║ playing during many of the guitar solos is a ║ │
│║ nice touch: it helps keep the riff-based, rapid ║ │
│║ feeling going even when both guitarists are ║ │
│║ doing their thing. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ IÆd be remiss if I did not mention vocalist ║ │
│║ Sebastißn, who does a very fine job on the ║ │
│║ album. He has a solid range, as he proves on ║ │
│║ most of the tracks, but what impresses me the ║ │
│║ most is that he doesnÆt strain his voice and try ║ │
│║ to reach forced high notes outside his range. ║ │
│║ Still, he is able to reach some impressive ║ │
│║ notes, like his wail to begin ôLeaving All ║ │
│║ Behind,ö the beginning of which almost reminds ║ │
│║ me of Lost Horizon. As mentioned earlier, his ║ │
│║ vocals are easy to understand, which is a nice ║ │
│║ bonus considering many bands from South America ║ │
│║ have very thick accents when singing in English. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The influences for this band seem wide ranging. ║ │
│║ At times I hear bits of Angra, DragonForce, ║ │
│║ Stratovarius, Rhapsody Of Fire, and even a few ║ │
│║ others. That isnÆt to say this band is a clone ║ │
│║ of any of those bands (or that they even sound ║ │
│║ that similar), but the influences are ║ │
│║ noticeable. The blistering guitars, particularly ║ │
│║ when used at the beginning of songs, resemble ║ │
│║ the oldest DragonForce albums. The keyboard ║ │
│║ tone, especially when used as a lead instrument, ║ │
│║ has similarities both to Jens Johansson of ║ │
│║ Stratovarius and Alex Staropoli of Rhapsody Of ║ │
│║ Fire. The orchestral, ôepic choirö moments of ║ │
│║ songs have a decidedly Rhapsody feel, and the ║ │
│║ Angra influence is felt most strongly when the ║ │
│║ music breaks and instrumental sections begin. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The album is not perfect of course. ôUnwritten ║ │
│║ Serenadeö is a ballad. The keyboards (piano ║ │
│║ here) are soothing, and the vocals are solid, ║ │
│║ but it sounds a bit too boilerplate as far as ║ │
│║ ballads go (and IÆm not a boilerplate-ballad guy ║ │
│║ to begin with). At 6:15, the song repeats the ║ │
│║ chorus one or two too many times, but it doesnÆt ║ │
│║ drag the album down too much. The song ║ │
│║ immediately following the ballad, ôEdenÆs Lairö ║ │
│║ features some female vocals, and (other than the ║ │
│║ ballad) is the only really mid-tempo song on the ║ │
│║ album. ItÆs not a bad track, and manages to ║ │
│║ remain catchy, but given the blistering pace of ║ │
│║ the rest of the album, this seems a bit out of ║ │
│║ place, especially positioned as it is û directly ║ │
│║ after the ballad. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Leaving All Behind is a promising album from a ║ │
│║ band that I was very pleasantly surprised to ║ │
│║ hear for the first time. There is much here to ║ │
│║ appeal to fans of all styles of power metal, but ║ │
│║ if you like speedy, guitar heavy power metal ║ │
│║ with liberal use of keyboards then you, like me, ║ │
│║ will find even more to get excited over. This is ║ │
│║ (thus far) my personal debut album of the year. ║ │
