│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ One of my lecturers once told me that Milton ║ │
│║ simultaneously perfected and destroyed the genre ║ │
│║ of the epic. With Paradise Lost, he began with ║ │
│║ creation and covered everything between that and ║ │
│║ the end of the world, making all prior and ║ │
│║ subsequent epics (Homer, Virgil, through to ║ │
│║ Dante and James Joyce) instantly redundant. ║ │
│║ Venom did that to themselves on their album At ║ │
│║ War With Satan, creating an opening title track ║ │
│║ of such unbelievable magnitude they could never ║ │
│║ hope to pad the effort out into an album and ║ │
│║ keep everything consistent. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As if to prove how immediately engaging this ║ │
│║ title song is, every time the preview of it on ║ │
│║ Black Metal ends I want to put the full-length ║ │
│║ on. The full twenty minute track is exciting as ║ │
│║ all fuck from the very second it begins, with ║ │
│║ the big guitar chords and clunking bass crashing ║ │
│║ into the still raw-sounding, simplistic drum ║ │
│║ beats of Abaddon and Cronos' inebriated, hoarse ║ │
│║ expostulations to Christianity. Let the joyous ║ │
│║ celebrations of hell begin! On that note, the ║ │
│║ lyrics are surprisingly good, a yarn about ║ │
│║ angels and devils duking it out in Hell and ║ │
│║ Heaven, way beyond the in-your-face lyrical ║ │
│║ interface of Black Metal or Welcome to Hell. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It's a monster of a track which moves from ║ │
│║ rumbling thrash to doomed-sounding slower riffs ║ │
│║ almost reminiscent of 'Heaven & Hell', and is a ║ │
│║ case of Cronos' bass sounding great throughout. ║ │
│║ He does pretty much the whole thing all the way ║ │
│║ through, a simple chug that colours the bottom ║ │
│║ end of the song, but the mix was good enough on ║ │
│║ this album that it really adds to the elegant ║ │
│║ carnage of Mantas' riffs. During the first half ║ │
│║ of the song Venom constantly switch up the ║ │
│║ tempo, racing at one moment before going back to ║ │
│║ slower sections with a better approximation of ║ │
│║ epic than is to be found possibly anywhere else ║ │
│║ in their catalogue, while the indulgent series ║ │
│║ of solos get the heart racing as if Satan ║ │
│║ himself was inside it. Of course, what with ║ │
│║ Piece of Mind and Holy Diver, epic, layered ║ │
│║ sounds were all the rage that year, but 'At War ║ │
│║ With Satan' can stand toe to toe with any of it ║ │
│║ and still look mean as shit. It does pretty much ║ │
│║ everything it possibly good in the runtime, ║ │
│║ atmospheric and sharp as nails at the same time. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I could ramble on about the song forever. It's ║ │
│║ their longest, heaviest, most aggressive, most ║ │
│║ grandiose, catchiest and even most emotional ║ │
│║ number, absolutely unbeatable, but I'm told ║ │
│║ there are some other songs on here too. The rest ║ │
│║ of the music here is only twenty minutes between ║ │
│║ the remaining six tracks, which conform to the ║ │
│║ rough and tumble speed metal of earlier ║ │
│║ releases. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While 'Rip Ride' is catchy, 'Genocide' is ║ │
│║ satisfyingly thrashy, 'Cry Wolf' and 'Stand Up ║ │
│║ (And Be Counted)' have a mean-ass mid-pace ║ │
│║ groove and grunting bass tracks, and are all ║ │
│║ pretty quality in their own right, they can't ║ │
│║ stand in the face of the might that has come ║ │
│║ before. See, it all fits in with my opening ║ │
│║ paragraph, clever dick aren't I. Meanwhile ║ │
│║ 'Women, Leather and Hell' is pretty formulaic ║ │
│║ anyway and 'Aaaaaaarrghh' is good for a few ║ │
│║ chuckles ("y'noisy cunts!") but honestly pretty ║ │
│║ rubbish. The tracks from the 'Manitou' and ║ │
│║ 'Warhead' singles that are found as bonus tracks ║ │
│║ on some versions are in fact much better. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ If this album had only the title track on it, ║ │
│║ I'd give it 99% or 100%, depending on my mood. ║ │
│║ Despite the lesser songs present I'm still ║ │
│║ rating it high, because I want to. ║ │
│║ Unfortunately, back then, noone had hit on the ║ │
│║ idea of putting these enormous brainchildren out ║ │
│║ as EPs, much like Moonsorrow and Swallow the Sun ║ │
│║ have done in recent years. And in the early ║ │
│║ '80s, an album with only one song would still ║ │
│║ have seemed a little inadequate, whereas now ║ │
│║ we're accustomed to it. Looking back on At War ║ │
│║ With Satan, it's easy to find the flaws in ║ │
│║ Venom's plot to end creation, but just think how ║ │
│║ fucking powerful it sounded in early 1983. There ║ │
│║ are two types of metalhead - those who have ║ │
│║ heard this album's title track, and those who ║ │
│║ are going to hear it. Don't stay in the latter ║ │
│║ category too long now. And try and find the ║ │
│║ version with the 'Warhead' single on it. ║ │
│║ ║ │
