Previously, weight-loss surgery was the last chance for the severely obese, but
in the last ten years there has been a 3,000% increase in the number of Brits
going under the knife. We meet 38-year-old David, who lost over 24 stone over
two years following a gastric bypass operation. Having piled on weight following
the break-up of his marriage and the death of his mother, David saw the surgery
as the first step towards a new life. His initial joy as the pounds fell away
turned to panic as his skin failed to tighten, eventually leaving him with over
five stone of excess skin. David now spends his days searching for a surgeon who
might be willing to take on his case, but it proves difficult as he is considered
a high-risk patient. With his girlfriend by his side and dreams of a family at
some point, will David ever achieve the happy-ever-after that he is hoping for?
Currently, 23% of adults in the UK are considered clinically obese. Rachel was
one of them. Eight years ago, at the age of 32, she had a gastric bypass which
went horribly wrong. Her intestine ruptured, poisoning her insides, causing massive
damage and ultimately leaving her incontinent. Her life-changing operation left
her unable to leave the house for fear of soiling herself and relying on her daughter
to help clean the mess when the worst happened. Now, with the possibility of
undergoing a procedure that could give her freedom to leave the house again,
Rachel hopes for a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
Over 1,000 Brits per year have gastric bands fitted, among them Samantha. Tipping
the scales at over 28 stone by the time she finished university, she was dangerously
close to death instead of beginning a brilliant new chapter in life.
Following her operation, Samantha spent a year enjoying her weight loss, shedding
almost 15 stone before it all went wrong. After suffering from crippling stomach
pains, she was taken to hospital where they quickly discovered that her gastric band
had infected her stomach and caused it to burst, leaving her in a coma and battling
for her life. Now, just coping with day-to-day existence is difficult. Samantha has
been left with a stomach the size of her little finger and so little energy that
she regularly falls asleep. Can she finally look on food as her friend, not her
foe? How can she get the spring back in her step without putting the weight back on?
Everyone wants a quick fix, but for these three, their dreams of being thin have brought them nothing but nightmares.
