░██ █ forth upon listening to the new unit offering from █ ██░
░██ █ cristian fleming. oh, it's fine enough as far as █ ██░
░██ █ these things go. the tracks impress as credible █ ██░
░██ █ amalgams of bass throbs, sculpted beats, and █ ██░
░██ █ tonal shimmer, and there's little doubt that █ ██░
░██ █ fleming's more than able to put his own ever - so - █ ██░
░██ █ slightly different spin on autechre's trademark █ ██░
░██ █ clanking patterns. █ ██░
░██ █ █ ██░
░██ █ but ennui pervades the listening experience, as █ ██░
░██ █ there's little here that's not been heard before: █ ██░
░██ █ interweaving patterns of analog keyboards, █ ██░
░██ █ percussive clicks and clatter, tracks that alternate █ ██░
░██ █ between languid ambience ('your arrival is our █ ██░
░██ █ arrival' and the lovely coda 'the perpetual no. 9') █ ██░
░██ █ and aggressive electrofunk ('medicine is using █ ██░
░██ █ (maggots and bats)'). and, yes, as the press █ ██░
░██ █ notes correctly state, traces of the usual suspects █ ██░
░██ █ (boards of canada, autechre) can be heard, as █ ██░
░██ █ well as echoes of less obvious practitioners like █ ██░
░██ █ apparat, but said notes are also correct - █ ██░
░██ █ regrettably - in noting a connection to vangelis; █ ██░
░██ █ 'tuscan steak,' for example, includes electronic █ ██░
░██ █ sweetening whose orchestral grandeur veers a █ ██░
░██ █ little too close to his new age style. █ ██░
░██ █ █ ██░
░██ █ to fleming's credit, he does update the unit sound █ ██░
░██ █ with some funkier breakbeats in 'caterpillar//iris' █ ██░
░██ █ but in general the album just doesn't distinguish █ ██░
░██ █ itself enough from its electronica brethren. it's █ ██░
░██ █ competently executed and composed but overly █ ██░
░██ █ derivative and, frankly, rather quaint. █ ██░
