│║ Zandelle could be summed up as a higher octane, ║ │
│║ heavier hitting counterpart to Gus GÆs current ║ │
│║ principle project Firewind, though to be fair ║ │
│║ Zandelle got started earlier and simply hasnÆt ║ │
│║ been quite as prolific due to constant shifts in ║ │
│║ lineup. They first caught my attention with ║ │
│║ their sophomore effort ôTwilight Humanityö, ║ │
│║ which saw a band very apt at recreating that ║ │
│║ riff oriented, thrash-leaning variant on USPM ║ │
│║ that was earlier explored by Helstar and Agent ║ │
│║ Steel, spearheaded by high wailing vocalist and ║ │
│║ founder George Tsalikis, who sounds fairly ║ │
│║ similar to James Rivera and is equally as ║ │
│║ competent. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ôFlames Of Rageö definitely lives up to its ║ │
│║ name, combining the melodic and lead guitar ║ │
│║ happy character that also typified ôBetween ║ │
│║ Heaven And Hellö and ôBurning Earthö (Firewind) ║ │
│║ with the recent colossus of an earth shaker ║ │
│║ ôKing Of Hellö by Helstar in the aggression ║ │
│║ department. The production emphasizes the ║ │
│║ largeness of the guitars and brilliantly mixes ║ │
│║ it with an equally thunderous rhythm section, ║ │
│║ almost to the point of making TsalikisÆ powerful ║ │
│║ voice sound small by comparison. Probably the ║ │
│║ biggest weakness this album has is that it is so ║ │
│║ pumped up with sound that it starts to resemble ║ │
│║ Nevermore at times, but only in terms of ║ │
│║ production. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ For the most part this album keeps things catchy ║ │
│║ and straightforward, moving back and forth ║ │
│║ between a speed/thrash character and an earlier ║ │
│║ metal character. ôKilling Gazeö and ôFlames Of ║ │
│║ Rageö particularly typify the former sound, ║ │
│║ listening like a brutal combination of ║ │
│║ ôPainkillerö and ôSuspended Sentenceö, but ║ │
│║ keeping things within the confines of a fairly ║ │
│║ standard song format. ôThermophylaeö takes ║ │
│║ things a tiny bit closer to a Nevermore feel, ║ │
│║ though a lingering melodic influence out of Iron ║ │
│║ Maiden keeps it well out of the vapid confines ║ │
│║ of hypnotic groove territory and it stays pretty ║ │
│║ fast throughout. In fact, with the exception of ║ │
│║ the more mid-tempo ôDark Nemesisö and the lone ║ │
│║ half-ballad ôInner Strengthö, this whole thing ║ │
│║ is just an endless barrage of hyper-speed ║ │
│║ metallic goodness with a dose of Manowar-like ║ │
│║ themes. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The focal point of the album, and the thing that ║ │
│║ both makes it excellent and yet also somewhat ║ │
│║ flawed is the towering 21 minute plus ending ║ │
│║ song ôEradicated Existenceö, which essentially ║ │
│║ throws everything at the listener except the ║ │
│║ kitchen sink. From the overall scheme of this ║ │
│║ somewhat overlong assault on the ears, it ║ │
│║ listens like an attempt to translate the same ║ │
│║ massive fit of genius for the USPM style that ║ │
│║ Iced Earth accomplished in the power/thrash ║ │
│║ style with ôDanteÆs Infernoö. There is even ║ │
│║ something of a similarity in the prevalence of ║ │
│║ gallop riffing, thrashing sections and Maiden- ║ │
│║ like tonality that hints towards Jon SchafferÆs ║ │
│║ mid-90s creation as influencing it, though it ║ │
│║ does sound a good bit different. It never quite ║ │
│║ gets boring, but it sounds like it could have a ║ │
│║ few minutes trimmed off of it. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Zandelle has been blessed with an ability to ║ │
│║ stay fairly consistent in the quality of their ║ │
│║ output, in spite of a number of massive lineup ║ │
│║ changes, particularly insofar as guitar players ║ │
│║ go. This pretty well tops everything that ║ │
│║ Firewind has done since 2005, and is geared ║ │
│║ heavily towards the same audience. If you want a ║ │
│║ leaner, meaner alternative to the German brand ║ │
│║ of attaining light speed that also keeps its ║ │
│║ distance from the keyboard happy, melodic craze ║ │
│║ that tends to typify a lot of European power ║ │
│║ metal acts, this is a solid release from a band ║ │
│║ that has stuck to their guns and treated the AOR ║ │
│║ craze among some bands with complete apathy. ║ │
