Finally, a victory for brilliance over blandness in Chillout,
so often a strange and difficult territory. A fine line
divides self-indulgent moody scapes so sopherific they make
you want to doze off, and the kind of blissful beats and
techno bleeps that scoop the listener up and take them to
another extra-mellow dimension.
Breathe a sigh of relief, because thankfully Cardiff trio
Mountain Men Anonymous belong to the latter category. Whereas
acts such as Zero 7 serve up chart tickling coffee table
mediocrity, these mountain boys look to expand the confines
of the electronica genre, take finding heart through pain for
example, employing the guest vocalist duties of Caroline Ross
to splendid affect.
Krkonose (a peak somewhere in the Czech Republic, if you were
wondering) is a brave album, which picks up the nerdy
computer paddle and rows out into unchartered waters,
consequently leaving the listener with a sense of enchanted
alienation, as if stranded in the middle of a great lake,
possibly even in the dark!
Throughout, robust drum loops, piano twinklings and sweeping
synths create a dim ominous shadow. See Quim for example, a
tune so haunting it makes Dracula's lair seem like Pat
Sharp's fun house, whilst Dolph Lundgren does its best to
collapse the speakers into distorted rubble. So onwards the
mountain men creep, surely not remaining anonymous for much
longer.
