Sometimes it takes an outsider to shake things up. That's what Chez
Music's Neil Aline has done with NYC's house-music scene. Since
moving to Gotham in 1995, the Tahiti-born, Paris-bred Frenchman has
injected a dose of adrenaline into the city's clubbing universe.
That's, at least in part, due to his love of the music, his tireless
support of the scene and his expertise on the ones and twos.
But the biggest effect that Aline has had on the city's -and the
world's- nightlife is through his beloved Chez Music, which since
it's birth in 1999 has been serving up top-shelf deep and soulful
morsels to a public hungry for fromage-free house beats. Chez entered
the echelon of great labels via Jon Cutler and E-man's 2001 megahit
"It's Yours" and the same year's On the Rocks mix-CD - now Chez is
cementing its status as one of the world's top purveyors of quality
house beats with On the Rocks Vol. 2.
This CD (mixed by Aline at the red-hot underground-music center APT,
where Aline holds a residency) is a mix of top tracks from Chez's
recent catalog of tunes, appealing to both the longtime Chez fan and
the casual house-music freak. Tracks like Mateo & Matos' "Sofrito",
Osunlade's sensual "Butterfly", Miguel Migs' classy "Moving On" and
Bibi's Afro-tinged Zum Zum exhibit a subtlety not often found in much
of today's crass club fodder, yet Aline and his array of artists
never forget that the dance floor is house music's raison d'etre.
