A living legend. This term is probably the only adequately respectful
way to start any representation of Juhani Aaltonen, for the man has
inspired every local reedsman who has come along after him. It is safe
to say that "Junnu" is Finnish jazz saxophone personified.
Aaltonen first picked up the horn at age eighteen and five years later
he was ready to begin his career as a musician. Two years later, in
1961, he had already done numerous dance gigs and decided to enroll at
the Sibelius Academy to begin studying the classical flute. These
studies were further enhanced by a term at the Berklee College of
Music in Boston.
With John Coltrane's music as a model, Aaltonen began to immerse
himself in the world of improvisation and free jazz. Soon after
returning to Finland Aaltonen befriended Edward Vesala, Otto Donner,
Heikki Sarmanto and Seppo Paakkunainen. Especially the long duo
sessions with Vesala proved extremely exciting and productive.
Mainly self-taught on the saxophone, Aaltonen has later stated that
technique is only a tool, not the whole package. He adds that young
players should develop the ability to respond to moods in the same way
they woodshed at their chops.
The late 60's and early 70's saw Aaltonen play with Vesala, the Otto
Donner Treatment, Tasavallan Presidentti, Heikki Sarmanto, Peter
Br÷tzmann, Tomasz Stanko and Arild Andersen. He received the Georgie
Award (aka the trophy for "Jazz Musician of the Year" as awarded by
the Finnish Jazz Federation) in 1968 and released his debut solo album
"Etiquette" in 1974. A year later Junnu was one of the founding
fathers of the UMO and stayed with this world-class big band until
1986.
In the 80s the sax monster's talents were recognized by an ever
growing amount of people. Aaltonen picked up a huge amount of studio
work, toured Europe with Andersen's group and appeared on a steady
stream of albums. Apart from the local greats and the UMO's stellar
guests Juhani stood on stage with Jan Garbarek, Charlie Mariano and
many others.
Move towards lyrical direction
In 1986 Aaltonen got a fifteen-year state grant, which enabled him to
quit the UMO and start concentrating solely on his own output. The
same year Juhani experienced a spiritual awakening, which contributed
into him cutting back the amount of jazz and other "commercial" music
work and concentrating on church concerts and such.
In 1990 and 1992 Aaltonen toured with his own quartet of Olli
Ahvenlahti, Heikki Virtanen and Reino Laine. However, in the 90s his
most notable projects have been a solo flute recital at the Tampere
Biennale and collaborations with his old brother-in-arms, Heikki
Sarmanto. The pianist/composer Sarmanto and Aaltonen celebrated their
35th musical anniversary on the 2001 duet album 'Rise'.
In an interview conducted on the 150th birthday of the saxophone in
1996 Aaltonen still emphasized feeling over technique but in the same
breath confessed to often thinking quite bi-partitely. "I think like
an engineer, yet act totally according to my instincts. For some
people the mental barrier in between their art and every-day reality
is so high that they have to stop playing altogether. For me life is
an ongoing school and I am an enigma even to myself."
