Amato's Sales Notes:
Mechanism is now able to release a new artist onto an unsuspecting
public, and present to you 'Chonga' hailing out of NYC and having
already signed tracks to 'Plastic Fantastic' and as 'Jas' to Satoshi's
'Saw' label. Phil Jason is the man behind 'Chonga' and 'Jas' and is one
of those helping to drive forward the twisted, deep but funky sounds
being championed by Digweed and co. right now. This track has already
seen turntable action from Deep Dish and Chris Fortier stateside and
with the new Sleepfreaks mix is set to do some serious damage. This is
the first of many for Chonga on Mechanism and a new project is already
under way...watch this space.
The A side: "Original Mix" is dark and twisted deep house, original
production and excellent use of percussion and loops. The track moves
between dark tribal elements and more housey parts with a unique style.
This New York based artist has definitely found and original sound and
with huge support from Digweed watch out for his forthcoming singles
and remixes. The AA side: "Sleepfreaks Remix" is a slightly deeper
than normal remix for the guys, they felt a deep building type of remix
would be the perfect compliment to the original. All the Sleepfreaks
trademarks are there but presented in a slighty different way, the
usual tight programming is punctuated by a haunting synth line that
builds throughout the track.
"Well, here we are at the seventh Mechanism release and what a mixed
bunch we've had from them so far. This time new artist Chonga takes us
on a much deeper route. In fact this wouldn't sound out of place on
Niche with its lush strings and ultra cool bass line. This is one for
those early sets or even late night sessions. Flip it over and you get
the mighty Sleepfreaks in action. But before you start frothing at the
mouth imagining peak time Sleepfreaks mayhem, they totally surprise
everyone by going for a much deeper techier route. Still, the boys do
the job, and I don't think anyone will complain."
M7/M8 - Derek Taylor
